Do you use you pinkie finger of your fretting hand? Are you not supposed to?

trick question , right? ok , tape 'em together pretend one of them is damaged and tape it to the other one let us know if you need your pinkey after that.

I'm not sure if you're serious but that actually sounds like a great idea!

I always utilize my pinky when playing the guitar, especially when running through scales. I find that it helps extend my reach on the fretboard.

If you do not use your fourth finger while soloing, you are going to be highly restricted. It is essential that you learn to use all the fingers of your left hand.
A good way to learn, is to practice the chromatic scale.
1st finger 1st fret, 2nd finger 2nd fret, 3rd finger 3rd fret, 4th finger 4th fret, Run through all your strings, starting with the open note.
You will, of course, only play to the 3rd fret on the 3rd string.
Run all the way up, from 6th string to 1st and then run back down again.
Good excercise for using all fingers.

I use all my fingers on my fret hand. I have not mastered the pick hand yet, I can use my thumb and 1st through 3rd fingers but have trouble with that pinkey. I tend to use a pick most of the time anyways.

There are very few icons that don't use much pinky(Clapton comes to mind),most do. As mentioned earlier by straycat, your cutting your self out of 25% more action!!! 8) Mike

RIght, I noticed that as I watched Clapton play. Also, Jimi seldom used his pinky alhough rumor has it his fingers were almost a full inch longer than most peops!

I wouldn't worry as much about your pick hand pinky. Even fast flamenco players rarely use that for picking, and ocassionally when strumming or fanning.

For my right hand, because I'm so used to electric and being able to snag my pick with my middle finger to open up my thumb and index, I'm very good at finger picking with just that index and thumb. With no pick, I can use the middle and ring pretty well, but have never seen any need to actually pick with that pinky. I'm sure if I really wanted to, I could build it up and find some cool use for it.

I do sometimes fret a note, and finger pick the harmonic for it higher on the neck using my index at the harmonic and the pinky to pluck the string to sound it out. I could probably take that a level higher and use that more somehow.

i did'nt learn that until 16 , the lead guitar player for the Knights (( my band)) hurt his ring finger right before a gig , he was great , don't do it all the time just when you need a workout or improvise exercise.

I use my pinky more than my middle finger, and almost as much as my ring finger when I solo.

One of the fringe benefits of classical guitar lessons where you use all four fingers to fret, and three fingers and a thumb to pluck.

Helped me a lot.

Use it. Love it. Need it.

It is naturally your weakest finger, but once you put it to use for a while it gains strength and you don't need to even think about it anymore.
