My favorite new band of 2009. It's hard to put them in to any one genre. Kind of a mix of indie rock and shoegaze. They just self-released their first album a few months ago, and it's amazing. Very unique and progressive, not just a rehash of 30 year old rock.

Check 'em out at

I know everyone hear tends to listen to stuff that predates Carter's presidency, so I thought I'd make a thread about modern music. What are some your favorite new bands?

Freaking awesome band!! I think I'm gonna travel to see 'em. They're not coming to Vegas. But I believe they're playing in LA this year.

Not in my case, I like Russian Circles http://www.myspace.com/russiancircles.

I've been listening to LoNero promo tracks http://www.lonero.net/.

I also really like Explosions In The Sky http://www.myspace.com/explosionsinthesky.

And World Music http://www.putumayo.com/en/.

As P-Funkateer George Clinton says "Free your mind and your $@! will follow!".

I have not been into any new artist since we hit the year 2000 and thats a shame.Except for a sporadic hit single by someone there seems to lack any consistency with new bands. First off unless I am in the car I never listen to the radio and even when I am in the car a cd goes right in.Then you hear people say that they find good music on the web ,I am not computer savy and I would not have the patience to go through a ton of websites to find someone. If there is a buzz in a guitar magazine about someone I will check them out but to tell the truth I have no idea how the music buisness or whats left of it even works anymore. So I stick with the tried and true artist I have always been into and there are so many that it sounds fresh rediscovering some great stuff you have not played in a decade.

Lots of great new/newish bands out there!

Some of my more recent (post-2000) favorites include:

Vampire Weekend
New Pornographers
Sam Roberts
The Decemberists
The National
Grizzly Bear
Doves

And don't forget Wilco -- though they've been around for quite a while, now...

For those looking for a good website about new indie/alternative rock...

http://pitchfork.com/

...is a good place to start. Lots of reviews, news and videos.

Commercial radio, unfortunately, has become an utter wasteland in terms of promoting new artists. The FM dial isn't even worth listening to, anymore...

I dunno... they sounded like, as my 18 year old daughter would say... "a hot mess..."

They're okay but I saw them open up for Eek-A-Mouse a few years ago, and was annoyed by their fake Jamaican accents when they talked in between songs....It doesn't sound like they do that as much now, but that was my first impression of them back then,"White dudes from Northern, Virginia with fake Jamaican accents? I'm over them."

My favourite new artist is Ida Maria from Norway. I mean that voice. Plus she plays a strat or a strat looking guitar.
