I agree with the statement "Country music ain't country anymore" I stick with mostly singer songwriters such as before mentioned Paisley and Urban and a healthy dose of Alan Jackson. Anything other than that is classic Haggard, Jones, Nelson, Waylon, Cash etc. As far as country groups i have found none better than Alabama and Diamond Rio. The new group the Zac Brown Band shows promise of good ole country boy music with a twist of jam band for the party. They are worth checking out for sure. Thoughts on Bluegrass? I think some of the best guitarist in he world play bluegrass. You just have to find some that's not overdone witih banjos and fiddles.

I agree with you guys too - Ive never been much of a country fan in the past, but a lot of the new stuff I really like - Gary Allan is a great performer - Brad Paisley, a fellow WV boy is quite the guitar player, and his songwriting is amazing! Keith Urban, another great performer, and has a few WV boys in his band as well, not to mention his band is unbelievably talented!

Zac Brown, wow, amazing - He opened for Keith Urban when I seen them in May - I bought his album the next day, and every song on that CD is amazing! I hope he continues to be successful!

I don't think you can talk country git-players without mentioning :

Merle Travis
Vince Gill
Danny Gatton
Chet Atkins
Jerry Reed
Albert Lee
Jerry Douglas
Sam McGee

and many more...Jimmy Bryant, Hank Garland, Don Rich and the list goes on...

tell ya what, i get much of my country fill from Grateful Dead. no really, alot of their sound is country-based. i like it alot[/quote]

I thought that was more of a Bluegrass thing which was also used by Led Zeppelin also. Anything mandolin /dobro mixed i consider bluegrass. I may be wrong but instuments such as mandolin or dobro or resonator is concidered bluegrass instruments. These two bands mentioned would be able to call some of their stuff blurgrass in my opinion.

well, i partly agree with you, and yes Garcia was a big bluegrass fan. though i don't know, the often used pedal steel gives a more trad. country sound imo. then again, isn't it somewhat safe to say bluegrass and country are almost the same thing (with obvious differences)?

speaking of pedal steel, i dont see why the instruments played should determine music genre. Robert Randolph plays a pedal steel, and he ain't playin no country (as far as i've heard anyway)

From my experiences with Bluegrass and country i'd have to say that they are alot alike. You just don't see many banjos or upright basses in country music and you sure don't hear drums in bluegrass. It's really the way the song is written and played that sets any genre of music apart. Some musicians just choose to use different instruments than others. I play alot of Rock music but with bluegrass runs through it with acoustic guitar. I guess you would call that indie or alternative right?

Country is the music most likely to make you commit suicide.

I like some country - some I don't - but there seems to be a lot more variety falling under the "country" label these days. Any of you ever listened to Lacy J. Dalton? I bought an album of hers back in college based strictly on a review I read somewhere, and didn't regret the money spent. She has a unique sound.

I'm not a good country player, but I try to play as many styles as I can to keep my playing interesting...hopefully. :?

It all depends on which country! :) We play some country in our sets, some new stuff, some old. It all depends on the audience. I don't listen to it but I do enjoy playing it.
