Wow, you really can get a good idea of what an electric guitar sounds like when you play it acoustically first.

Not only can you hear a good electric guitar played acoustically, you can feel it as the body and the neck will resonate.

Let me get in with this before SlapChop points it out ( ).

In the unplugged A/B the mic gain is louder on the second guitar - you can hear the background noise level rise. So of course the old guitar sounds louder.

Sound is no more nor less than vibration transmitted through matter. Change the matter and the sound must change - even if it's just swapping one piece of mahogany for another. And I have no doubt that wood also changes sonically over time: we all know that from our acoustic guitars.

However, this is just not a convincing demonstration of any of that.

What it does show very effectively is that tiny acoustic differences between similar guitars are to all intents and purposes lost beneath the influence of the pickups.

Cheers - C

And the differences between the pickups are partially fritzed with by the strings, cable, amp circuits, tube type, tube age, speakers(s)...

...and any stomp boxes....

...and that annoying thing called the guitar player.

Don't you just love this stuff!?

Not to mention playing with fingers or a pick or even a steel pick, (talk about bright!) I sometimes actually use National steel finger picks. And then of course where you pick/strum the string/s, you get that tinky sound at the bridge and the deeper fuller sound at the neck. And that's regardless of your amp settings or if your body is made of a single piece of zebra wood.

The older guitar definitely has something different that is better, but that is in a side by side comparison right after hearing the other one.

If you were to watch a band play the same songs in a bar one night with the true '59 and then go back the next night and watch the same band with the same guitar player play the RI, then I don't think you would be able to tell the difference. If they were both playing side by side at the same time you might notice.

Jay they upped the mic volume/gain for the 59. For the similar reasons to your believing these forums are scanned by fmic marketing employees, i distrust all guitar magazine reviews. Infact i'd go as far as to say guitar magazine gear reviews are downright unreliable. They wont knock a bit of gear that some company is paying for a full page ad on a few pages over.

To perpetuate the vintage gear myth in that ad can only lead to increased profits for dimarzio and gibson. The idea conveyed is, 'you'll never own a real 59, but put some paf's into a 59vos and you'll sound so close plugged in no one can tell'.

Jay truth be told the dimarzio PAF is a astounding pickup. Never mind the paf screamer or whatever. Just the plain old humble PAF. The only humbucker you'll hear do those vintage humbucker tones better is a vintage humbucker.

There a canny lot the dimarzio fella's. They own the name PAF humbucker. Even a 59gibson bucker isnt a PAF these days. :D

And don't forget, they also own the patent in the USA for double creme HB bobbins. That's why no other American HB manufacturer advertises a double creme model.

Remarkable.

I can clearly hear the noise floor come up for the "noticeably louder" vintage guitar, so I have to agree that it's boosted.

What I don't understand is why there is any advantage to DiMarzio to perpetuate the myths of "aged electronics" and so on when they are selling brand new, non-vintage stuff. Curious, indeed.
