Jay its hard work starting up. I found the majority of my band members through
http://www.joinmyband.co.uk/classifieds/us.php
Ignore the .co.uk theres plenty of US listings seperated by state.

What you need to do is be prepared to travel and compromise what you want to play in favour of a collective choice. Your style will always come through in your playing anyway.

Is there anything like Craigslist in your area? I know people advertise in that too, though I'm having the same problem as you. Most who advertise are looking for members for full time bands and most of the weekends only bands seem to be long time friends.

My biggest problems though (even in a city the size of LA) are that I'm a non-singer and can't do any gigs Monday - Thursday nights and Friday would have to be close to where I live because I don't get out of work until 6:30. The biggest seems to be that I'm a non-singer though ... I've sat in with 7 or 8 bands and they thought I was a great guitar/bass player "but we need someone who can sign at least backup."

So possibly too if you have a decent voice, you might want to emphasize that along with your playing skills. Around LA anyway, I've found that to be the deal breaker in all but one case.

I started cuz I was friends with the drummer, he was in a band but I didn't like the guitar player...funny thing was, I ended up kicking out the drummer, the singer and guitar players are friends of mine now for over 20 yrs. I still go back to NY to record for my best friend, the guitar player - best man at my wedding :)

Craigslist is probably a good place to start.

Or perhaps you have a local musicians website in your area where people can go to promote themselves and look for bandmates.

We have such a site here in Buffalo...

Seems like its getting tougher and tougher to do any kind of networking these days without going online! :)

I've had good luck going to local open mic jams and blues jams and networking with other musicians who are there to play, sing, or just listen.

It's great to find a solid drummer (or any instrument) and get to hear the person play before even asking about gigging together. Kind of like an audition before you talk thing.

Good luck!
