I have stated before my brother who is 7 years older than me has been collecting records for 50 years now- well they dont make vinyl no more but the point is I grew up surrounded by massive doses of new music as long as I can remember .Than I found my own groups like ZEP, Sabbath,Queen,Deep Purple,AC.DC the heavier side of music in the house but there was so much good music going on .My sons 17 and 11 dont listen to todays music they listen to mine and my wifes .Not because it is forced on them but because they like it .There are to many talented young people out there that I have to believe the next serious big thing is only a few years away and when it hits it is going to inspire others to follow suit.BIG THING means ORIGINAL as in writing and playing and not created by madison avenue. As for you young guys on the forum at least you are in a better situation right now in the sense that there is tons of great music for you guys to explore that is going to sound fresh to you.Me I am going to go pick up Chicken Foots new cd.

I came of age in the late '60s/early '70s where much of the music was Blues-based. I still keep trying to find something new. I've even tapped the Gibson site's mp3 downloads page to search for new bands. Amazon offers free tracks, too.

I have so much more fun buying the older music than the new stuff. :D You can walk in a store and get some great music for less money than the new crappy stuff. Today I got Santana and Lynyrd Skynyrd albums for a combined $16. Today's CDs cost $20ish for one good song and some filler (not all bands but too many).

If you live near a Newbury Comics store, you can find some great deals on older music. Maybe even through their online store :

Disturbed always seems like the modern album to buy.

There are a few of us here on the forum that still buy some vinyl albums. Some of us still love the sound of a true record.

I have a ton of vinyl. My buds come over, and we sit and swill some brews with the turntable spinning. Definitely something isn't the same when listening to digital recordings.

I just found my parent's old turntable in storage last week! I thought it wouldn't work, but amazingly after twenty years it still does. My parents have a massive collection of vinyl that I'm getting to listen to (finally) now. My first record was "Fragile" by Yes. :D

I have a giant record store just down the street, that carries a lot of old and new vinyl. I spend some cash there every pay cheque.

Almost 20 years ago, ( I was going to type a little while ago, but I guess that isn't true anymore!! ) I lived down the block from a guy who owned a chain of record stores that specialized in vinyl. Of coarse he was taking a beating, as CD's were starting to really take off, and people had cassettes for portable music. He had to close down half his stores, and he had a bunch of the vinyl in his garage. I would buy records from him for like 10 cents each.So for 6 months I'd drop him 20 bucks every payday, and I'd always pick 4 or 5 albums I knew I wanted, then I would pick the rest at random, only pausing to make sure they were in decent shape, and that i didn't already buy a copy. It took me years to work through all the new stuff. It was a great way to broaden my music horizons. My only regret is that i didn't spend 50 or 100 bucks every 2 weeks.

Beethoven's late string quartets are other worldly. I mean that literally they sound so heavenly to me that it sounds like LVB had composed after he passed on. They aren't easy pieces but well worth the effort, IMO.
