FYI, Ceri...there are available small and relatively inexpensive hot-smokers designed for simple backyard use.

Ha! Well, big man: you're reading my mind!

My wife's birthday is next month and in true male fashion I'm planning to get her a present that's really to satisfy my own current fad. I'm looking at a range of backyard hot-smokers, from tiny little things that fishermen carry round in their packs to largish structures that will need to be delivered on a truck.

I guess I'll end up somewhere in between.

I won't forget to update you when I've something to tell...

Cheers - C

Realizing that this is not going to be smoking in an economical way - but -

Last year I finally broke down and got a Bradley Smoker. Does superb "cold"smoking as well as smoking/cooking.

Once the temp outside gets much above 60 or 65 degrees, cold smoking gets a little tricky. I have lately been going for smoked cheese with melty gooey results....guess I should wait until Winter. I can, however turn out a pretty respectable brisket or rib slabs.

Now, the Ceritone Pickup may be a CERI TONE Pickup?

Well boys, you're working your way through my window shopping.

Here's another option I've been looking at:

http://www.forfoodsmokers.co.uk/

That seems kinda simpler and possibly more appropriate for a beginner. But I'm wondering whether as soon as we're up and running we'd bitterly regret not getting the Bradley that Flashback has got himself?

Unlike guitars, I'm not sure I can seriously justify several smokers...

Ceri you really ought to talk to Vince on the smoked foods.
Anyhow I think Claude is trying to push you into pickup winding.

Can i have a tele instead of a strat. I've got enough strats and only one tele. I have an idea for bone saddles on it.

If I could make a suggestion, I'd actually recommend against a vertical charcoal smoker. They can be very difficult to manage the heat between racks. The lower rack can often burn from direct heat of the coals. This is especially true for top-loading vertical smokers because you cant really rotate the food for uniform heating. If you go for a vertical smoker, get one that has side-doors to access and rotate the food.

   I'm desperately trying to run out the door, very late - and you people keep dragging me back with interesting posts!

Jay and Flashback, that's just the kind of talk I need more of. On that last site I linked to, do any of the models stand out to you as the way to go?

And Niki, I'm all ears for anything your friend Vince has to say...

Regarding the guitars: I've never made a Tele and feel it's about time. But I'm also kinda stoked up on the thought of doing something with the Burnt Strat bod. Nick, let's talk... later.

(I'd be delighted to leave pickups to someone else. Hey, howsabout... The Ninja Pup?)

GOTTA RUN!

Cheers guys - C

I've got some friends that, like Big Jay, prefer the horizontal charcoal or wood fueled units. They enjoy the stoking and all the other requirements. They claim the end product is totally due to their prowess and not in any way automated and is a true testament to their skills. I can't disagree with them and will certainly eat anything they offer, as it is always superb!

I like the Bradley since it can run essentailly unattended for hours at a time. I will usually run smoke (have been on an apple wood kick lately) for about 2 1/2 hours and have a total cook time of around 7 or 8 hours for a full size brisket.

Yea, I went soft and converted from wood burning to a gas burning fireplace last year, so convenience seems to be my mode here lately.

I still think a White with Maple neck Forum Guitar is doable

Hi ya all, I had this idea the other day. Would it be possible for a group of Fender Forum members like us, to order a limited private run of Stratocaster or Telecaster from the Custom Shop?. Just for the sake of sharing a special instrument within a group of respected and appreciated fellow members around the world.

Now there is a few things to consider, like Fender is probably going to build a 100 years Leo Special or something like that, the idea is not to interfere with that.

A member run private edition has surely been made somewhere, sometime ago so I didn't came with this idea by myself, so don't think that i'm trying to steal someone else's idea.

Not everyone is able to gather the big bucks to buy an expensive guitar or a second one. We could talk about a 1000$US to 2000$US for the moment and adjust as we go along with the project.

We would have to decide if we want a MIM with a sticker on it, or a MIA with a unique feature on it, like a special color and/or pups or something else, or a fully loaded affordable Custom Shop with a killer option unique for the members who would want to buy one. (The more initial orders, the cheaper the guitar)(Within reason, of course).

This idea would have to pass the test of customers interested enough to order the guitar.

We would have to decide of a reasonable price, probably linked to the number of guitars ordered.

It could be a one shot deal or a continuing run, let Fender decide about that.

There will be a lot of other things to consider but for the moment let's just think about it for a few days, and if this idea is not a winner, SO BE IT AND LET IT DIE. On the other hand if the idea catches on enough members maybe we could end up next year with a Special Limited Run Members Only killer guitar.

I want to finish this off by saying that this is just the idea or suggestion of a project, and I do not want it to be seen as a concurrent to any going or upcoming event, carried on by Fender. Just an idea, so what do you think?

Let's see if we can make something out of it. :)

I think he means the guitar number. Say there are 100 of them, and you have the third one made, it would be 3 of 100

Sod it. I vote we all converge on peckham and pickett Ceri to make them. We could all have what we want then.

CV great idea about dropping the word forum from the logo and have the guitars number instead. Very classy.

I'll only go if Ceri serves up some smoked fish.

Done! No need to picket, lads: just turn up. Beer, smoked fish and custom built guitars. Let's do it!

Here is an easy idea for you guys....

Since, as it seems, about the only thing most on this thread seem to agree on is a decal or logo of some type, why not design special sticker you can all put on your guitars?

Hi Big Jay: I've been scratching my head over it all night and I believe I've come up with a design for those stickers:

Image Image

(Don't know where I got the inspiration from...)

Black or white, to suit different guitars. If folks have other color guitars they want to stick 'em on - well then they're welcome to spend half an hour on Photoshop coloring in the pixels in those little GIFs themselves...!

Someone who was really set on this idea could of course print one of those logos onto waterslide paper and make their own decal for body or headstock. They'd better get written permission from Brad to use Fender's design first, though!
