You might enjoy the very thorough book by Alan Lomax "The Land Where The Blues Were Born".

Also, check this link: http://www.deltabluesmuseum.com
Located at the proverbial 'crossroads' in Clarksdale, Mississippi. A very low key but fantastic place dedicated to the blues heritage of the Delta. Lots of displays, video, music and even the cabin that Muddy Waters was born in!

It really is a must see for any fan of the Blues. Work takes me that way once in a while and I always make time for a visit.

I've seen parts of it but sadly have not been able to see the whole thing. It looks spectacular from what I've seen.

How come everyone forgets about Son House, half of Robert Johnson's songs were versions of his stuff.
Anyway check out the 80's movie crossroads with Ry Cooder and Stevie Vie as the devils guitar player. :D

Please check out “Mean Old World: The Blues From 1940-1994.”

Lawrence (Larry) Hoffman was responsible for the Grammy-nominated liner notes.

From Lawrence Hoffman’s ‘Myspace’ website:

He was Grammy-nominated for his notes to Mean Old World: The Blues From 1940-1994 which he compiled and co-produced for the Smithsonian Institution Press. Most recently, he was the chief liner note writer for the double Grammy-winning collection, Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues. He was named Living Blues Magazine's "Liner Note Writer Of The Year," and "Best Compiler Of A Historical Compilation."

Both of these sets will be very entertaining and very educational if you take the time to really study the material in conjunction with the liner notes. :)

I would recommend the American Folk Blues Festival series of DVDs. There are at least three volumes filmed in Europe. They offer terrific performances by some of the biggest names in the Blues -- some in their prime, some in their later years, and some giving their last performances.
