I recently had 3 guitars set up by an authorized Fender dealer.
2 of the 3 guitars still buzz on a couple of the strings. Is this normal or did I get a bad set up. I have taken my gear to the same place (same tech) for years and lately I don't seem too impressed with his work. I am going to do the set up myself next time. The store had free set up day so maybe thats why its not up to par.

So it was free? Really what do you expect. The guy wasnt getting paid for it. Surely if the bulk of the work is already done, then if your dilligent you can sort the odd buzz out.

NEVER presume that just because a given dealer is an authorized Fender anything that the the guitar technician(s) within are competent. ALWAYS presume that when someone has to mass produce free work that it will be substandard.

Is it L&M? I was tempted to do it too (factory setup) on my new MIM, but I do mine custom plus I figured that day they will have a lot of folks and rush through the jobs which equals substandard work most of the times.

You can double check the setup against the "official" and tweak it and that should solve your issues

We love to speculate...the job was obviously not done correctly regardless of the circumstances, so you should bring it back. If it's the same guy, explain the problem and see if with more time, he can resolve the string buzz. You may have to leave the guitars there for a day or two for him to try to fix the problems with the string buzz. If this is the same guy you said has been a bit shaky of late, maybe it's time to take them to a different tech and see if they can fix the two guitars.

Yeah it was L&M. I told them I wouldn't expect them back for a week, but I had them 2 days later. I will probably tweak some things to my liking now that most of it has been done already.

If its not an acoustic guitar, and you can't hear the fret buzz through an amp, is it really going to be that much of an issue? Seriously man, if its you can't hear it through an amp, and its not an acoustic guitar, how big of an issue can/will it be?

Also, learning to do your own setups is invaluable, and you cannot really seriously damage your guitar unless you go too crazy with the truss rod...though thats just my opinion, and don't complain to me if you somehow do seriously damage it trying your own setup

When doing a setup and having to adjust the neck relief sometimes it takes letting the guitar sit for a few days and checking it again. I have had guitars needing a neck relief adjustment just days after doing a complete setup.
Take them back to the tech and ask him to check the setup again as it is not quite right.

Yep my tele has a treetrunk neck and needs tweaking for about a month after initial adjustment. It never seems to go where you want it to.

that's why I set my own stuff up. Plus it's kind of fun.

You often receive exactly the level of service and skill you pay for.

Personally, 'swear by Third Coast Guitars and happily pay them for their formidable expertise.
