Local craigslister is selling what looks like a Yammy RBX170 for $75:

I have 4 basses, so I don't "need" another one. Sfaik these street at $179.99, MSRP: $279.99, so the used price is less than half street, which is my usual standard for a good deal.

I don't have, and have never owned, a P/J, so I'm thinking this might be a neat addition to the stable. (Other basses are: Fender MIM Jazz, Squier MIJ P, Epi MIK T-Bird, and a Peavey USA Fury I.) I've never played a Yamaha bass, though I once owned a Yamaha electric guitar and currently own a Yammy 12-string acoustic, both of which were/are solid products. Are these RBX's MIC? If not, what country of origin? Any experiences good or bad? Heft? Neck? Pups? I know these are seen as starter basses at the bottom of the Yammy line.

Wot say you, my brethren (and sistren)?

Would. :D

If i liked the guitar and had the cash.
My bass experiences are very limited. During our bassists faliure to perform and subsequent sacking lastnight i got to play his bass. I'm strongly considering it as a way forwards with my playing.

I highly recommend doing that.

I switched to bass from lead guitar in a band where the bassist quit. as well. Playing bass makes you a better guitarist, imnsho, as you tend to think more rhythmically and also more in terms of chord structure and key. Playing each helps and informs playing the other.

And from a purely mercenary standpoint, you become a more marketable player. Good bassists are always in demand, while guitarists are comparatively a "dime a dozen" as we say in the States.

And I don't mean that as a knock on guitarists (I play both), it's just the way it is.

I'm not sure about that particular model. A few weeks ago our band decided to use band funds to buy a Bass for recording and gigging. Sometimes our bass player can't make gigs due to his job.

Well I found a Yamaha rbx-774 at a pawn shop for $160. I didn't know anything about it, but when I plugged it in it has a killer sound. It's an active bass, lightweight, and has a lot of poweer in the highs if you want it that way. It definitely ended up being a good purchase. Yamaha can make some really good stuff.

Yours is a nicer bass, for sure.

Yamaha uses the numbering system to denote quality/price. Lower model # = lower price. The 170 is the entry-level RBX bass.
