I got a email from The Ventures' fan news that Bob Bogle passed away on June 14 http://www.theventures.com/?pg=news&id=48. I knew that he was in poor health, but was hoping that he would get better.

I had talked with Bob a few times, I helped organize a fan based effort to get The Ventures in the RHOF.

Rest easy, Mr. Bogle :(

Who hasn't been influenced at some point in their life by The Ventures?

Since I didn't start playing guitar until I was 22yr in '72, I wasn't influenced by them until a few years later. My friend, that gave me by first guitar, is a big Ventures fan. He still has his original Mosrite Ventures' model guitar from the '60s http://tinyurl.com/l5jr9y.

Probably around the late '70s I started learning Ventures' songs, and wow was I hooked. I also got the chance to see them live in the early '80s quite a few times.

I'm also a charter member of the RRHOF http://www.rockhall.com/ and when I saw that The Ventures weren't in the RRHOF joined a letter writing campaign to have them inducted.

May this picker's fave Venture play Jazzmaster, Jazz Bass and Mosrite Mk I to huge crowds in Heaven, whenever he wants, for eternity.

Walk, Don't Run, through the gates of The Beyond, Honoured Master.

Eternal thanks to one of the truly great musicians of all time, for sharing so much with us and influencing, inspiring, filling so many hearts and minds and souls with the magic of instrumental guitar-driven music. And being this picker's Number 1 influence.

Bob, your perfect, eloquent, precise lead guitar and steady bass, played over almost 50 years, will forever resonate in this soul and many tens of millions of others. What a magnificent, precious legacy!

Thanks, Bro, for being you. You are the best. THE best. Thank you.

RIP Bob up in Rock & Roll Heaven.

I, like many of you, was also influenced by the Ventures.

Most recently they appeared in town for a Les Paul tribute. I rummaged through my old LP's and found an album of theirs I had from when I was a teen (Outer Limits). Had it signed by all of them this past year. I was like a teenager when I got it signed. My kids thought I was nuts, but I'm sure you guys understand.

His passing just puts things in perspective. Enjoy everday. Whether your a guitar hero, or just ordinary folks, life is way to short. I'm gonna go home tonight and play Walk Don't Run, Slaughter on Tenth Avenue on my axe as a salute to Bob.

Oh and thanks thouston for the info and the pics (now there's a man that looks like a guitar player)!

Walk Don't Run was first song I ever played for pay. My band (myself on guitar, long time friend on drums and a guy he knew on vocals and rhythm) were hired to do a backyard birthday party. The singer knew a couple Stones and Beatles songs so we put those together. For the rest of the set ... had to be surf tunes I and the drummer knew with the singer more or less faking the rhythm or just leaving the stage.

So we opened with Walk and closed with Wipeout - extended versions, considering that we only had three vocal numbers to sandwich in between.

Great times, so thanks and RIP Bob Bogle. I'd say that many of us "lead" guitarists starting off in the mid-60s owe you a great debt!

Anyone growing up during the 60s', especially if you play guitar has to be saddened by the passing of this musical pioneer!
