The first step in promotion is to know what you're trying to get from it, because how you go about promoting yourself will depend on the result desired.

For example, what do you hope to gain from repeatedly posting links of this video of you adequately playing some else's music on this forum? A gig in John Mayer's band? Offers for studio work? Praise from fellow web-haunting guitar players?

I think the first thing is to have something to promote. I have nothing ready at this time. I do have a Music MySpace with some demos on it. But it is mostly for my 12 fans... and one of them is my brother!

I have nothing ready except a demo or two myself so I'm still writing. One thing I've noticed is that unless you have a lot of free time, it's going to be difficult to check and update more than just a few music posting sites. I've looked at over 70 different sites and I know I've missed a few. I had shortened my list to 4-5 but there seems to be new sites every week.
