So, I've found my first friend who wants to jam with me, but he lives in Brisbane in Australia, and I'm here in Wisconsin, in the US.

He's been talking about setting up a Skype videoconference to play together, so I was wondering if any of you have ever tried this? I know the picture and sound quality can be a bit low, but my biggest concern is whether the audio cuts out depending on who's talking, so we wouldn't be able to hear both sides of the conversation at once and hence couldn't hear both guitars.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I would worry about delay and timing. Then again I don't know that much about skype.

I haven't used Skype in about 2 years but, when I did, I remember a significant delay. I would suggest seeking out some other video conferencing service.

I would think that no matter what there would be a delay, even if it was a second thats a lot but it should not stop you from communicating .You could mail him tracks of yours and vice a versa and still work on projects together. I just think you would have a problem in doing anything in real time

Screw all "it's free over the internet" bullstuff.

Because of this kind of loophole pretty soon it's going to cost us all more just to use the darned internet.

The corporations that maintain the infrastructure aren't stupid. They are already trying to legislate an internet usage charge above and beyond what you pay your ISP for access.

Arrrrrrgh

Well, mthorn, since they never got around to inventing those video phones like they had on the Jetsons when I was a kid, "free over the internet" video over IP is going to have to do for now...

My friend is actually excited about the possibility of a delay, we might be able to use it as a delay-delay, like a pedal, if the timing works out. Will keep you all posted.

Hey Ellen,

I've used Skype for years, it's pretty cool. The quality of audio/video can be outstanding at times, and at other times it sucks lemons. I've jammed with a few people on it, it's a lot of fun for the most part. When the quality isn't so good, it can be a bit frustrating. Give it a go, and let us know how you get along. Good luck :D

I've just noticed this thread was started in 2009
