Here's some tips you should know about playing guitar.
1.Gets some Computer software or a book that teaches you how to play note,Chords,ETC
2.Distortion-If you want your sound to be like a Metal player, you want DISTORTION.Just set your Treble,Bass, and Middle settings on your amp all to the limit,Then set your gain to something thats over your selected volume. Some amps have a Drive or boost button,Also there is a Drive(Boost)Volume switch. If you turn on the drive(Boost)And set the gain to max , you should have a Very loud and distorded Tone when you play.
3.Tuning:Right now if your guitar is out of tune, let a pro tune it for you.It could cost something but at least its tuned. He/She could also tell you about tuning.Tuning is also the esaist way to break your strings. That happend to me when i was messing with knobs.
There are more tips but it all won't fit. Please reply and tell me if this was helpful (please dont tease me) VGStrato47 8)

I Think you brought up great points VG AND MAYBE THE MOST IMPORTANT and over looked for guys starting out.Make sure your guitar is in tune. That is the single most important and overlooked problem of beginers and some pros(anyone remember a thing called grunge)I always teach guys just learning though to try to play with a clean tone as much as possible as distortion can mask a lot of clams. But a very nice job.

I actually think a teacher will save you time and help stop bad playing habits.I took martial arts and with all the videos and learning material , theres no way you will ever learn prper technique without a teacher to tell you what your doing wrong.

I would also say that your fingers are going to hurt a little at first. You'll be putting your fingers in positions that aren't normal for you in the beginning. Plus you'll be building callouses on your finger-tips. In the beginning you might even experience a small paper-cut or blister here and there. Just don't get discouraged and quit playing altogether. It's normal, and all the pains of starting out will go away eventually.

Another thing, is to learn the notes on your fretboard.
If you take the notes A,B,C,D,E,F,G.
Start with A and play that note on all six strings for example;
6th string 5th fret
5th string open
4th string 7th fret
3rd string 2nd fret
2nd string 10th fret
1st string 5th fret
Then do it with B and so on.
Then you have the flats to go through, Ab,Bb,B,Db,Eb,Fb,Gb.
Being able to play all the notes off without hesitation will be of great benefit and this is a simple excercise to achieving that.
Whatever you do, make it fun. Enjoy.
