I don't know 'bout you guys, but I can't listen to it or consider it music.

I consider it a form of music, just not one I like. To each their own, I just march to a different drummer.

It IS music, but that doesn't say much these days

I'm more concerned about the lifestyle promoted by most regular rap music, pretty much every youngster believe they are mobsters and gangsters just by doing something criminal, AND THE FREAKIN' POLICE EVEN STARTED CALLING THEM GANGSTERS
Big cars, big mommas, big bugs, big clothes, big guns, what the #$@*&!% $@!& happened to the songs about racial and social equality?

Rap is music...

Just like there are probably certain foods you don't like, there are going to be certain styles of music you don't like. Just because you don't like, understand, or don't get something doesn't mean you have to try and convince any and everyone who does like, understand, or get it to think otherwise. It doesn't mean there is anything wrong with you, and it doesn't mean that there is something wrong with what you don't get or understand. I don't fully understand brain surgery, but does that make it wrong and do I not like brain surgery? No.

That's one thing I don't get about things and people at times, is that there are a lot of people out there who claim to be all about individuality and freedom of art and expression, but only if its the exact same art, expression, and individuality they believe in...if its exactly the same as someone else, then where's the individuality they believe in?

There is something wrong with people's hearing if they think it's any good... and most times the message isn't very positive.

Rap is music.

You only reveal your ignorance of music history - and are dead wrong - if you say it isn't.

Also, just by calling the entire genre "rap," you reveal that you haven't heard much of it.

Sure, a lot of it is stupid. A lot of rock 'n' roll is stupid, a lot of country music is stupid, a lot of all pop culture is stupid. See if you can guess why.

I know a few that are having some success with it (success = radio airplay & royalties) after doing the club thing for low wages for years.

Here is a link that I think is pretty good :

http://h2osoul.bandcamp.com/track/vikki

It's like any genre...some like and some don't. :?

the soul of rap is the lyrics so it more a way of expression than playing music

Way back they used to steal just enough of someone else's music to get away with copyright infringement and loop it. Most of it is just garbage Yo, ya know what I'm say'n?

The influence it has on young kids just awful. If you let your young kids listen to the foul stuff, shame on you. You can get your point across without all the foul stuff. The old timers like Run DMC did and had some positive messages too. Not just F notes all over the place.

Is it music? I guess so, are you ignorant if you don't think it is? Nope.

Well, yes, actually, you are... ignorant of 100 years of music history, and art history, for that matter.

That doesn't make you a bad person, or mean you're not entitled to an opinion. But if you make a blanket statement like "'rap' isn't music, then you are demonstrating that you are ignorant of these things.

If you understood the evolution of "musique concrete" or John Cage's theories, if you knew why Cubism gradually erased impressionism, if you knew anything about, say Arnold Schoenberg's or Charles Ives's music, you would never say 'rap' isn't music. You might say you don't like it, but then, that would be an actual opinion. Trying to expand one's opinions to universal truth almost always makes you sound like you don't know what you're talking about.

As for a terrible influence on kids: last night, a group of teenagers were having a "the folks are gone" party in the yard directly behind my house, seeing off one of theirnumber who had joined the Army. I could hear the standard hip-hop thud through my back wall, so I walked over and asked them to turn it down, whihc they did. As the party got rolling, people gradullay cranked the music up, until I could hear it again more than clearly. So I walked back again, and asked for Tucker, the young man throwing the bash. WIhtout getting angry, I explained this was a Sunday night, and people in the houses along my street had to get up in the morning. Do you know what he said?

This strapping 18 year old jock, a big fan of hip-hop dance music, said, "I'm sorry, sir, it won't happen again." And he turned the music down, for good this time. Gee, how bout that? "Sir." I didn't think anybody said that anymore. Nice kid. (And now, he's not the recruit.) So, once again, the blazing generalization that "rap has a horrible influence on young people" is, well... wrong.

Anyway, I'm glad we had this little chat.

Its simply teenager rebellion tripe. That is all. I figure they can listen to anything they want and expect they will grow out of it eventually. What really chaps my hide, are those complete idiots in their cars with their 10,000,000 watt sound systems driving down my street with the volume turned up thinking anyone but them wants to hear that crap.

Yeah, and get offa my lawn, with all those stupid rock bands like The Who with all their "teenage rebellion tripe." Here's hoping they grow out of it and learn to enjoy decent music!

Ignorance is thinking that the hardcore stuff doesn't effect the kids.
It depends on where you live. In some of the areas that I live near, you would either get F.... off or threatened with bodily harm. It's not a blanket statement, it's a fact that has nothing to do with race either. Some kids think Gangsta Rap is a way of life.
