RAP AIN'T MUSIC!!

I found this title on a local magazine.....(translated)
They say rap nowadays doesn't have any music component...the background music just copy from other music and edited them with beatboxing and more mixing

I don't really like rap actually (and I think there's no one really like rap in this forum), but I think this one (the article) is something that can make a music war :) .....

What do you think?

Anyone who says rap isn't music is only being snobby. Not a big fan myself, but I can appreciate it occasionally.

The most important thing in rap is they have some great producers who are talented guys that I will admit. But I do not like it, listen to it, and in 47 years never bought a single recording of it.I just wish it would fade away as it is blocking people who can actually play an instrument a chance to be heard but until the kids who buy this or should I say are force fed this wake up I dont see the end near.

I won't say it's not music. Lots of people love it and think it is. Personally I can not stand it, and I do not listen to it at all.

+1

I have some friends who are really into it, but in most cases that's not the only kind of music they like.

By technical definition it is music..

Webster’s defines as
Music…myoo-zik

Noun..

1.. an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.

2.. the tones or sounds employed, occurring in single line (melody) or multiple lines (harmony), and sounded or to be sounded by one or more voices or instruments, or both.

Not my cup of tea or anything I want to listen to. I just don’t get it and am not going to spend any time or effort trying to!!!

There is plenty of other music out there I do dig and I think I will put my attention there.. lots of people like Rap music and buy the products and that cool/ that’s part of having a free economies.

The thing that gets my goat is the counter culture that Hip Hop inspires and projects… I am sick of every where I go seeing folks with pants 9 time bigger that the size the actually wear and there falling down with the underwear pulled way up / hats sideways. (Maybe I am just showing my age) ….O well I say go ahead and rebel but remember; you’re going to have to grow up and be responsible some day.
O’ and by the way. YOU LOOK RIDICULOUS!!!

Anyway just my take on the whole thing
Cheers :)
Bill

I think of rap and hip-hop as the modern day version of a beatnick poetry reading and disco respectively. Perhaps at one time the performers had something important to say. But, now it's just a product. And I find it a way for people with out any musical talent to have a music career.

I also hate what passes for R&B these days, too. There are no longer any performer that even comes close to the likes of Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Little Richard, Sam and Dave, Wilson Pickett and the long list of forgotten R&B artists of old.

As for the producers... how much talent do you really need to cut and paste loops into Pro-Tools? I guess they do prove one thing... you can polish a turd...

Ranting over background pounding and a variety of unintelligible noises is FAR from music.

Just another style, some like others don't. Not My slice of pie but it sells and some eat it up.

Fab Five Freddie told me everybody's high
DJ's spinnin' are savin' my mind
Flash is fast, Flash is cool
Francois sez fas, Flashe' no do
And you don't stop, sure shot
Go out to the parking lot
And you get in your car and you drive real far
And you drive all night and then you see a light
And it comes right down and lands on the ground
And out comes a man from Mars
And you try to run but he's got a gun
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head
And then you're in the man from Mars
You go out at night, eatin' cars
You eat Cadillacs, Lincolns too
Mercuries and Subarus
And you don't stop, you keep on eatin' cars
Then, when there's no more cars
You go out at night and eat up bars where the people meet
Face to face, dance cheek to cheek

i don't listen to rap much, but i do consider it music. it has a beat, and you'll notice that a lot of rap has a singing part as a chorus, and rap as verse.

the main idea of rap is the words, not really the music. however, i think the words today are kinda dumb, and older rap was much better. my friends listen to Lil' Wayne and stuff and i don't much care for it.

The calling it music part is the one that burns my as$,to call it music someone has to be playing an instrument not looping someone elses or having a machine play drums, and as far as having vocals sure they hire 3 background singers who probably dont even get a credit and are the only ones who have any talent to sing and when they actually try to sing a chorus the cats in the neighborhood are crying. The subject matter has been the same for the last ten years.Well for those of us who are old enough to have lived through the disco era this actualy makes disco sound great and at least on a lot of disco you had some interesting guitar, funky rhythm patterns.I swear I dont care how many times I see Joe Perry and Steven Tyler talking about doing walk this way with Run DMC they must secretly want to shoot themselves, and except for the change in the chorus the original is way better.I cant even talk about this subject anymore.

It's true for most of the rap scene, but there is rap that is musical, legit, and good.
