If the case is fur-lined, it probably smells worse than the guitar itself. I would recommend dousing the case inside and out with Febreze or a similar product.

As for the guitar, I'll defer to the true experts on the site. Would Lemon Pledge help or hurt?

Deth is that smoke like in cigarettes? Either way just give the guitar a good cleaning and polishing and leave it out of the case for a few days and it will eventualy air out .The case on the other hand might never totaly get rid of the smell. If you have a yard with a shed or some covering I would leave it outside and open for a while and see if it clears up .Good luck.

I also wonder whether changing out the pickguard might help.

Temptation is to use a very good clean, soft white cloth, barely damp with distilled water. And clean the cloth often by rinsing it out.

Smoke will deposit on top of the instrument surface and many of the (several hundred) chemicals in it are water-soluble.

Recommendation is NOT to use something like Pledge because it has a 'glosscoat' in it and that may seal in the smoke.

Remember to take off the strings and clean the fretboard and headstock, as well. Best of fortune.

I've never understood this. I personally haven't ever run across a guitar that smelled like smoke. But I would say a simple Meguire's coat on the body and back of the neck, and lemon oil on the fret-board should do the trick. It's the same cleaning I regularly do anyway.

Must be Cigar or Pipe smoke. I'm not sure cigarette smoke is strong enough to make a guitar smell like smoke.

I have heard that putting baking soda in a sock then putting it in the case with the guitar helps. Never tried it though.

how bout the stuff they sprinkle on carpets. put it in a small open container and leave it in a closed case. should do the trick. i wouldn't sprinkle it in the case. then leave the case open to air out the smell of the carpet fresh.
