The story hendrix gave to eddie kramer was that it was from a comic scifi story he read where aliens attacked and used a ray gun that shot a purple haze.

This is one of the most famous misheard song lyrics ever and the inspiration for the "Archive of Misheard Lyrics" at http://www.kissthisguy.com/ 8)

No in the studio version he says "kiss the sky", but some times when he was playing live he said "kiss that guy" just to be funny.

As much as I enjoy the pile-on.............IIRC I read in a bio (of the same name as the disputed lyric) that Jimi sang "kiss this guy"at a show while hanging on Noel Redding.

Having said that................

What i find utterly absurd is that someone could take hendrix's joke about his own work and equate that with a form of homosexuality. Not only is it slightly daft its also a bit homophobic.

Please take that as the joke its meant to be.

Common Mondegreen

A common misheard lyric in the song is "'scuse me while I kiss this guy". The actual line is "'scuse me while I kiss the sky". In fact, it has even been said that Jimi Hendrix himself perpetrated this mondegreen by actually using it as a joke while singing Purple Haze live in concert.[10]
