yeah, it seems as if there is always some discrimination against musicians of the left-handed variety.

It depends...some left-handed people have no trouble playing guitar right-handed. In other cases (such as my own) it just doesn't work.

I'm left handed in just about everything: writing, throwing, batting, bowling...you name it. But when I got my first guitar, I bought a right-handed model at the suggestion of the music store owner. He gave me all the usual reasons for doing so: 'the fretting hand does all the work, anyway,' 'they don't make any left-handed violins,' 'you'll have a better selection of guitars to choose from.'

I struggled with that right-handed guitar for several years and never felt like I was getting anywhere with it. I could do fingerstyle somewhat okay, but when I played with a pick it always felt uncomfortable and sounded sloppy -- even simple things. I was on the verge of giving up guitar altogether when I tried having my guitar restrung for a lefty player.

It instantly felt more comfortable, and within a couple months I was playing better lefty than I ever had righty.

They say there are degrees of left-handedness -- so I guess that people who are just 'mildly left-handed' or relatively ambidextrous can learn to play right handed without too much trouble. For others like me who are strongly left-handed, it just doesn't seem to be an option.

I have tried many times. But I'm just a natural lefty and it just feels way to awkward to play rightie.
