i need help with my set up. I have a(believe it or not..) Yamaha 100 w head with the bottom 4 speaker cab and a great little Ross practice amp(10 w) . The room i practice in is small; about 10x12; one floor lamp for the music stand and a two-bulb florescent fixture above. I plug in a pedal,a small keyboard, and sometimes a small fan to move the air. No matter what i do, it sounds like an electrical storm in there..Do i buy a "noisegate"? Any suggestions at all..?( Playing a newer strat with nothing but a Boss distortion pedal).

Have you tried using regular light-bulbs in the room? It's been my experience that flourescents caused me trouble. Even the small high-watt flourescent bulbs in floor lamps. Sometimes those don't have good wiring in them either.

I agree with Shredd6, flourescent bulbs make a weird noise...

either 60 cycle hum from the strat or its ground buzz. does the noise go away on the "in between positions"?

Are both amps making the noise? If so, its something with either the lighting, or perhaps grounding. If just one amp is doing it, its the amp...
