Hey all, I have read in a few guitar books, that if you remove all of the strings from your guitar, it will be permanently and unfixably damaged. Is this true?

If so, how is one supposed to clean the finger board, replace pickups and other things that involve needing to have no strings on the guitar?

Thanks

Lol thats a load of bull!

What it does do, however, is release the tension on the neck so it's advisable to change one string at a time and clean as you go to keep some tension on the neck.

I slowly detune, then remove all the strings every time I do a string change. I clean and treat the fretboard every 2 months.

For as short a period as it takes to change the strings you will not damage the neck.

One of them is called teach yourself guitar by nick freeth, and it cautions against removing all of the strings because it says it may damage you guitar. The other book (cant remember the name, was looking at it in B&N) outright said that if you take off your stings you will destroy the guitars neck and bridge

Yeah thats crap.

Cautioning is fine though and is probably just there because they don't want any lawsuits on their hands

When strings are on your guitar they exert a force on the neck, pulling it away from the body as you can imagine. That is why there is a truss rod inside the neck which helps you make adjustments to the neck, keeping it straight. When you take off the strings at once all that tension is released and the neck is relieved. It's just like a Bow (as in a bow and arrow).

The only damage I can see happening by taking off the strings, is if you could cut all 6 strings at once, then you might have some neck damage, not to mention what that may do to a floating strat bridge.

I had a really old nylon string classical acoustic in my early years. Well, I didn't know any better and went put some steel strings on it, about three days later the guitar said: "F**k it" and the bridge popped off, it was pretty loud, but there was no neck damage whatsoever. But those classical necks are pretty big anyways, I don't think that would've really mattered though.

That's a load of nonsense, just don't take the strings of every week.
Two times a year for cleaning the fingerboard.

It straightens out so you can work on leveling the frets.
I mean a qualified person doing the job.

Maybe they are talking about guitars without trussrods. I've never heard that about taking off all the strings at the same time.

Yeah I don't know. I have to go and look it up now when I have more time. It might be interesting to learn some more about the phsyics involved with the tension of the strings and the neck. I guess I'm just a guitar geek. Thats a good one.

I was thinking about string winders. Have you ever seen those big plastic jars full of string winders at a guitar store? You use those to take off the strings but theres never any warning about messing up the neck of your guitar. I got one that came in a package. Its this dunlop string winder that comes apart and you can attach the end to a drill.

Its a string winder drill bit the instructions just say to attach it to your drill and unwind the strings then zoom zoom. I have to look it up now because I'm worried about messing up my guitars.
