i run a sign shop out of my home and a guy came by to order something for his church. he spotted my telecaster and said his band was looking for a guitar player and invited me to their practice session... so... i got together with them and i think it's gonna work.
my concern is that i've only started playing lead, and that's what they want me to play. i've been playing rhythm guitar since noah dropped me off the ark, but, hey, they tried me out and... so far, so good.
any advise?

Just go for it man! Sometimes we need to get "thrown in at the deep end" to truly discover what we're capable of. Just go with it. You might just surprise yourself.

ONGRATS FRANKIE, The only advice I can give and this is good dont try to do to much and over play.If your doing originals just play to the song -some nice fills or arpeggios in spots, dont try and over whelm just because your playing lead, and the more you practice with them the more you will get a feel for what you guys want to do.Good Luck and KEEP ON ROCKIN

thanks guys... i just gave a response to a "new band" thread and gave the same advise on "don't overpower"... i don't think i fall into the category of people who have that capacity anyway.
they gave me a binder of their songs and, lucky for me, the chord progressions are pretty straight forward and easy to follow. the pentatonic shapes seem to fit and i have a pretty good handle on them. i'm working on the major scale shapes right now... not quite ready to throw any of that in right now, but it'll come.

Yo Kid!! Doyle Bramhall II (who toured with Roger Waters)tells how when he learned that Waters was looking for a guitar player for a "The Wall" tour he bought the recording on cassette having learned, much to his great surprise, that his casette player could cancel the track on which the guitar solos had been recorded. So it was, practice, practice, practice, practice.

Find out what the band plays and bust your chops....

Good luck!

I would say to not over-do things and to practice numerous scale patterns.

well, what i'm trying to do now is to re-create the songs using the music book they gave me and punching the simplified rhythm tracks into FL Studio... drums and bass for the most part. i render the files to mp3's, then i can plug my mp3 player into my amp and play along. works ok, but it takes a couple of hours to assemble each song. enough to practice with and experiment with fills and solos... i just wish i had more time to play with my toys.
the band right now is not a lucrative project, but we're hoping to do some "town green" sort-of things before the summer's out.

well, the kids are out with the wife, so it's time to plug in :)

In addition to all the great advice that's already been given, focus your playing on striving to make the entire band sound as good as it can through your contribution. And, don't forget where you'll be playing. A bit of dialogue between you and the Almighty will give you everything and certainly more than we collectively ever could.

Congratulations!!!! :P
I wish you and your band the best of luck. Hope to hear of a debut album in the near future!

And like everyone here's been saying; just go for it. It's best that you're "thrown to the wolves", as the owner of a music studio/school once said to me about playing bass for the first time for the band I was to start playing with. (What a sentence. 8)) You need to see what you're capable of before you just block out anything and everything but rhythm guitar. :P
Just keep practicing, and, trust me; you'll get there. :D

it's a christian rock band... not hard to remember who's driving the ship ;)
me and the band's founder are practically neighbors. the drummer and bass player are about a half-hour away in different directions. everybody's members of different churches, but we all seem to be on the same page.
the other 3 guys have been together for awhile. it's all good so far and a lot of fun.

Congrats Frankie.
Your story sounds familiar... I had been playing acoustic for years mostly rythm. The praise band at my Church invited me to practice with them and the next thing I know I was playing on Sundays...That was 7 years ago. The lead guitarist at the time took me under his wing and became my music teacher and today I play in 2 different bands as lead and have soared musically. God has been good to me in that regard.

Take your time and enjoy it. Just remember it's not about you...

Get ready to learn lots of chord inversions. I didn't even know what a C2 was until I joined the church band that I'm in right now. I think the reason for this is most Christian music is composed on the keyboard. Keyboard players seem to like them inversions.

Hey you know who to get a guitar player to stop playing?

Put a chart in front of him.

:D
