For the length of my guitar playing career (about a year), whenever I wanted to learn a new song, I looked up the tabs on the internet. I'm trying to train my musical ear, and have heard that tabbing things just by listening to them really helps. Any tips on how to get started?

I started out listening to easy, fun songs. Born Under A Bad Sign by Albert King or Susie Q by CCR are great starter songs.

Have fun,

There are a few computer programs available that should make it more fun. You can write out the tab using the program, then listen to it.

PowerTab is Free
GuitarPro is a Paid Program.

I have both and they are pretty cool to play around with. AND there are places to get tab that others have written to help you learn other songs too!

I had no trouble with tab ever.Very weird the first time I saw it way back when it was just very easy to me.The thing I look for first is the chords on top and since I know my chords well everything just falls into place. It is like if the first chord is D you look and see is it 2cnd,5th,7th,10th position or what ever and then know where the riff or licks are being played at.Some time you have tabs that dont have the chords on top and it will slow you down just a bit.If I really want to learn a song proper though the best thing is just get a live performance of it then its a breeze because there are so many tabs that sound right then when you see it being played everthing is in the wrong positions.

Best combination is internet tabs plus YouTube videos plus ears
