So, i'm pretty much set on a standard strat, but Which do you think would be best for playing old school grunge, strat or tele?

I'd go for the Strat. But I'm sure there's some other opinions. Go try them both out and see for yourself.

Either guitar is versatile enough to handle those styles of music with the right amp, and perhaps effects. If you're set on the Strat, get the Strat, as you're the one who is going to play it, so go with what you want, and not what people who you have most likely don't know too well say on an internet forum...

I prefer Teles, but a lot of the "Old School" grunge is played on guitars with humbuckers. Which old school grunge bands do you mean? Skin Yard, Screaming Trees, and Soundgarden, for example, use mainly humbucker guitars...Tad would often use Fenders with HBs in them. Nirvana used whatever wasn't smashed from the previous show...then bands like Mother Love Bone would have one guitarist playing a Fender, and another on a Gibson...Not that this really matters, as I firmly believe its the player thats more important to how something will sound as opposed to the gear...but I just mention this because Grunge is a broad term for many different sounding bands. Mother Love Bone sounded nothing like Mudhoney, as Tad sounded nothing like Love Battery, yet all these bands are considered "Grunge"...

Why not try out both guitars personally to decide which is better for grunge?

I've already tried both guitars, and they both are awsome, but I like the strat just a bit better. Oh yeah, and the type of grunge i'm talking about is Green River and early Nirvana. old school grunge and punk would have to be my faveorite genres.

Well - if you're going for Kurt, you should check out a Jagstang, Mustang or Jaguar HH...

I just bought a Strat VG a couple of weeks ago for $899 at Guitar Center in Tempe Arizona. Solves the problem, it sounds like both.
