I just started last week with a voice teacher, and I'm really glad to be doing it but finding some things a bit mysterious, so just wondered if any of you have had formal training and had any tips?

The main thing I'm having trouble getting is the position of the "soft palate" at the roof of the mouth. The way my teacher explained it is it's like you're just about to yawn, not quite a yawn because then you sound like you have a potato in your mouth, but almost. But when I try to sing that way I end up with a sore throat, so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong...

I've never had singing lessons (desperately need them though). What i know from some of the more acomplished singer i've worked with is that the soft pallete/tongue technique is vital for articulation. If your experiencing problems call your teacher, its what you pay them for. They dont want you practicing techniques incorrectly. It reflects badly on them.

Same here mate, thats why i'm considering taking them. I have a very carrying voice and would like to turn that into a good singing voice.

Did anyone catch the Joe Bonemassa interview in the april english guitar mag. He was saying he's had to change his vocal technique with his weight loss.

If having a large belly means you've the potential to become a good singer i'd better hold the diet.

Ellen , Riz , when in college in a sight singing ear training class our professor a well known and respected baritone (why i took the class) taught us about singing and training the ear , the class attended a recital and he and another professor were on the bill our professor on first was magnificent the piece he chose very masculine even regal then the other professor came on his voice shook the room , not the PA , ten decibels louder , more , the piece he chose went an octave lower showing the range and volume of his voice , i thought when you wake up in the morning you've got that voice how could you not know? any group singing teaches alot , for me not so much the class but seeing that was worth the tuition , "from the story , treasure of desert mama , 'we don't need no ..........Lessons'!"

When I was younger I was always told I had a fabulous voice and could comfortably hit several octaves (think Frankie Valli) so I never even thought about singing lessons. Now that I'm older and the octaves aren't as easy to hit I am still told I have a fabulous voice so I still have not thought about it. If I wanted to go professional I would take them.

Yeah, I've taken voice lessons.

My teacher didn't really say anything about the "soft pallate", but it sounds to me like you aren't being as nasal as you should be. Just go slghtly nasal so you don't wear out the throat. It should also help it feel better afterwards.

I'm in a 20-person chorus, but nothing one-on-one
