I wouldn't give to much credit to a magazine poll. Remember magazines get endorsed by record companies. Award shows are even more rediculous.

I could argue (and this is my opinion, keep in mind) that Sinatra should be way ahead of Dark Side of the Moon. Dark Side is one of the most influential and creative _rock_ albums ever but in terms of overall impact, I could easily make a case for my choice.

In any event, there's the issue of sponsors but there's also the so called "proximity effect." More recent albums will tend to get in even if not quite classic because people remember them better.

Perhaps a few greats like $@!&*'s Brew or Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" should be rated near the top. They're equally creative (again, personal opinion) but far more out there in a leading/daring sense than when Dark Side was released. By then, there was already a modest audience receptive to creative and thoughtful music.

It's all subjective anyway. It's the tastes of the compilers (and the age may factor in), the sponsors, proximity, probably sales figures to some extent and a host of other factors. My list would be nothing like their list ... or yours!

I have a hunch that if we asked all the forum members to compile their 500 most influential albums, that perhaps only 100 would appear on nearly everyone's list, and certainly not in the same order. A lot of mine for instance would be older (honesty called for: I'm not nearly as familiar with the many modern groups as those from the 40s - mid70s and this would definitely color my choices). I'd equally guess that people in their 20s would be pretty light on albums from the 40s and 50s, especially in the non-rock classes.

the joshua tree, u2 and

thriller, michael jackson

are the only albums that are ranked above dark side of the moon that i disagree with.

here's little richard, little richard

and at folsom prison, johnny cash are two albums ranked below dark side of the moon that i would rank above dark side of the moon.

obviously music is such a subjective thing like all art.

i don't think this list is proof that rolling stone sucks...rather it is proof of how futile and stupid these best of list are...

i didn't look at the whole list but looking at the top 100...i can't argue with many of their choices.

I don't worry about those lists--it's just one person's opinion--or the combination of a certain group's opinion at that point in time.

Ask them to compile that list the next day or a week or month later--and it would change--not completely, but some albums would move up, some down, some disappear.

The most important lists to you should be the one you'd make--and possibly the ones of those whose opinions you value.

Well it is better than some years back when they had the SEX PISTOLS NEVER MIND THE BULLOCKS #2 I wonder what happened lol.The Clash at #9 no way in my book and I always like pearl jams ten better than nevermind and look at the placings there. The velvet under ground, talking heads, patti smith, pixies tose are all rolling stone darlings.Roliing Stone used to hate LED ZEP they blasted every album they made,And I wonder if (God forbid) Paul would of died instead of John how there solo works would be looked at.I love John but a lot of those solos had a shrieking Yoko on them no way.I dont know how she ever brain washed him but she did.Correct me if im wrong but I saw nothing from STEVIE RAY but DR DRE I GUESS EVENS IT OUT LOL.

I can't believe Eminem (or however you spell it) was on there but not a thing from SRV. Texas Flood should have been on there AT LEAST.

Now I remember why I don't read magazine lists. They tend to be stupid.

One thing's for sure, greatest hits albums should not be eligible for the list. Seems cheap...

It's funny that they had the Hendrix albums in the wrong order!

Everyone knows that Axis is the best Hendrix album (if not the best album of all time).
