I'm sitting here watching VH1 Classics. It's Bruce and the E street Band. No smoke machines, dancers, 20 foot screens, or lip synching. Just talented musicians. Everyone's playing the instruments and contributing to the overall sound. Or groups, like the Temptations, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

With some exception I don't think there is any comparison; Beatles, Cream, E Street Band, Doors, etc, to whats out now.

OMG I think I just sounded like my father.

I find myself more into 60's, 70's, and some 80's music than the stuff that's out these days.

easy there Dad...LOL

I agree, back then you got to hear more of the artist as they had to use what they had. (little more than talent)
I do have to wonder if there were quite as few film flam acts then as well.. modern day and age there is more technology, ie careras, video, more radio stations and so on leading us to just see more acts to include the cookie cutter bands and what not… then they did not get the coverage…ahh could be wrong..
I think the smoke machines lights and showmanship is ok if it is icing on the cake of an already good musical performance. Your right though those things are more used to hide no talent these days……. I love them but you can thank KISS for a lot of that…..

You guys that say that music nowadays isn't as good as it used to be need to stop listening to pop radios and Hanah Montana music. I'm not trying to be rude or anything. Just... do me a favor and pick up a "Vans Warped Tour" or "Take Action Tour" compilation CD or something. There are a ton of metal and punk bands on them that make me happy I'm from this generation.

Good point and that's another thing missing. You could listen to "album oriented" rock stations. And we had a really good station here back in the day. Now you gotta go satellite to get variety.

Over the past 9 years I have listened to many styles and time frames of music (everything except rap and hip hop) and as I stated in my previous post I find myself listening to 60's, 70's and some 80's music. That is my personal preference.

even though i'm old and washed up, i can still enjoy plenty of the new music that's around. down here in NZ there are heaps of bands putting out some interesting and engaging material. sure it's different from what was selling back in the 60s and 70s, but this is a different world and the music reflects that. i may feel real old when i watch some bunch of 22 year old kids playing their stuff, but who cares.

I think every generation has some great music to reflect on. I do think sometimes people get caught up in evaluating this decade by the screamo/metal movement of late. But I can still reflect on some great music by bands like Incubus, Tool and A Perfect Circle, Godsmack, etc.. The list would go on and on for me.

I run across really good bands and songs all the time these days. Recently I came across this song:

I LOVE this song!! Just lets me know that there's great music all around me if I'm willing to seek it out.

I think the quality of the musicians is mostly the same, but there are just more artists, bands, and genres to sift through these days. When I was growing up in the 80s, it seemed like there were only good movies being played in theaters, because most theaters would only have a few screens. Then once the mutliplexes opened up, they had to put something on all the screens no matter how good or bad it was. These days it seems like with music since there are 24hour music stations, either on TV, satellite, etc. it seems like most record companies just sort of carpet bomb the market these days with hopes of some return, as opposed to the older days, where it seemed that record company's still used a bit of judgement and discretion. I may be wrong on that, but it just seems like they just put out anything these days if it will bring in a buck or two...

Music from the 60's and 70's is the foundation of the music of today more or less. If you listen to all of it and compare you will hear alot of the older generations music coming out of todays music. That being said todays music just doesn't have as much to say that hasn't been said.

Music from the 60's and 70's hands down. Everybody's a singer songwriter today. You need a commercial label.

Along those lines, even - in reflection - the '70s era of disco that we all hated is really not so bad. There was some real great musicianship there. Unlike today's dance music where there is barely a musician in site (and certainly never a drummer).

There was plenty of commercial plastic formula crap on the charts in the 60's, 70's and 80's...go back and look at the top 40 from those periods if you need a reminder..Pat Boone? Tiny Tim? Partridge Family? Starland Vocal Band? I write those criticisms off as selective memory. And let's not forget that many revered bands like the Stones and Zeppelin were originally dismissed as pale imitations of their original influences.

There are tons of talented young bands out there if you don't rely on radio for your exposure, and I think the basic level of musicianship is light years ahead of what you had in the sixties and seventies. I think generally players are getting better at younger ages. I hear 16 year-olds doing shred licks that would have made my jaw drop in 1975, and it's nothing to them. Back when I was a youngster, a cheap guitar and amp, a couple of barre chords and the minor pentatonic and you could be working. These days the expectation is to be fluent in a range of styles and techniques, in addition to mastering the new technologies, and having a veritable arsenal of gear at your disposal.
