I think threads like this compel both Gibson and Fender to raise the bar! A lot of good information and good ideas come from threads like this. It's like the "free writing" they taught us in English class...from a bunch of babble comes something useful.

What bugs me about Gibson is that you can't get a descent guitar from them for less than $1,200.00 (new). Those sub 1000 SG's really, really suck. Their necks are wobbly. The pickups suck. The wood is relatively toneless. They just sound B-A-D to my ear. The older SG's, some of them are rocks and are highly playable, but those are the exceptions, not the rule. AND, I can get my tele to sound like an SG, NO PROBLEMS. Hell, I can even get my tele to growl and honk like a Les Paul...for ...399, new, delivered to my door.

And, who knows, maybe their's something about Gibson some of us don't know and from this thread we may learn to like or appreciate Gibson better.

I like threads like this -- you learn a lot.

Different guitars all together! I like them both and some others. Not a one is a do it all guitar which is why artist will have several different guitars sitting on stage with them at concerts and I have never heard one say Gibby's are no good. I can get sounds out of My Les Pauls that I would never get from My Tele's or Strat's!

Exactly---there's room for both of them, and then some.

The world of music would be much poorer if either Fender or Gibson was erased from existence.

And don't forget there's more to guitars than solidbodies. Fender's never had too much success in acoustics and archtops (both semis & full hollows.)
Gibson hasn't had a lot of success with basses.

Yet there are fans of Fender's acoustics and archtops. (I'd love an original Starcaster--the 70's version) There are fans of Gibson basses--for example Jack Bruce.

If we all played the same gear--it would be boring.

Reverand guitars are amazing they have a very unique tone circuit, so is the PRS One. The Gibby Melody Maker is a great little guitar for the money too. I've never played a Gibson and I have owned and played many that had a "wobbly" neck. There is a distinct difference in feel between a set neck guitar and a bolt on neck guitar.

People very seldom mention PRS or Reverend on the boards. I like some of th Reverends the warhawk and the Jetstream's and PRS are well I can't say anything bad about them and the American ones that they make local here to me are amazing.

As someone who owns three Gibsons and two Epiphones (verses one Fender and one Squier), I'm not going to "pick on" anything. I have a much easier time adjusting the action on my Casino than on my Strats. I'm still not entirely comfortable with the way my Strats sit, and I've been playing them for three years.

I will say, I quite admire the members of Barenaked Ladies' choice in guitars... they stay away from the "Fender or Gibson" debate... I've only seen them with two Fenders - Steve played a black Tele, Ed played an HH Strat - the rest of the time they've been playing other brands... the closest was the Guilds Steve played.

Other than that, they're playing Taylor, PRS, Hofner, and custom Dennis Fano guitars.

Why you be hatin' on Gibsons anyway? :?

Now that I can get a SG standard cheaper than a MIA strat I'm thinking a Gibby may be in my future.

why are we talking about gibson on a fender site anyways?
i had a lespaul for a very brief time did not like it.
the fender strat is more versatile/ better feel and sustain.
the only gibson i would even consider and thats a maybe
would be the SG. other than that you can keep them.

GENTLEMEN

what do you want out of one guitar??
My tone tool box has many sounds, and not from one guitar.

to play metal

2007 dean dime razorback w/ emg 81/85's
2008 schector synster gates signature w/seymour duncan custom invaders
2008 schector hellraiser 7 w/emg 707tws

to play country

2003 G&L ASAT telecaster w/mfd pickups
2005 G&L ASAT classic telecaster w/mfd/cigarette pups

to play rock

2006 G&L legacy classic ( super strat ) w/seymour duncan hums & coil tap
2007 Bill Collings 290 w/hand wound Jason Lollar p90's

to play blues

2009 Fender strat american 50's v neck w/ scn pickups and s-1 switch

to play rockabilly

2006 Gretsch 5120 hollowbody w/tv jones p/ups
2008 Peavey jf2 ex w/ single humbuckers

and i sold my Gibson 76 reissue explorer because it was not good enough to be in the line up.

So it seems we need more than a fender or gibson can provide???

the Rat

Epiphone Tony Iommi G400--- Metal

Esp LTD James Hetfield Truckster--Metal

I certain guitars for certain tunnings from e d c b a etc..

I love fender but i think unless you modify it or buy a artist the sound is really for jazz.rock blues.

My next guitar is either a fender american std hss strat or a schecter c1 hellraiser floyd rose ed.....im leaning on the fender

im also taking apart my old squire and rebuilding it with a fender big reverse headstock neck, emg single coils

STRATRAT AND DETH,Thats the way to mix it up as I said if I play something and I like it I buy it nice choice of axes guys.Right now I am having the PEAVEY custom shop build me a HP CUSTOM and if no one is familiar with this ax you have to check it out. This is where the Wolfgang left off you can have the floyd set or floating as it has a lock in the back for what you prefer. The Humbuckers have coil taps so you can split to singles and the neck is the same as the Wolfgang which is one of the best necks I ever played. The guitars as good as it gets for me check one out if you never did.
