No, I'm not picking on Phish. I'll apply my liver biopsy analogy to Umphrey's McGee or Aquarium Rescue Unit if you like. :)

I agree some of Phisih's stuff is very cool and singable. "Julius" from Hoist is one of my favorite records of all time, and would be a huge hit if played on pop radio. (But don't their fans all hate that album?)

ANd I agree that radio is weirdly limited these days. When I was young, you would hear the Beatles and the Supremes right up against Sinatra and Johnny Cash, all in the same hour. The pop charts were far more diverse, and nobody complained. IN fact, stations with eclectic formats are making strong inroads, but only in urban areas like San Francisco and Austin, where hipsterism has been elevated to a kind of art form.

The problem is, FM radio simply sucks these days. It gives virtually no exposure to new acts and plays the same ol' songs from the same ol' bands year after year after year. Any new performers that are promoted on FM tend to be either hip hop or cookie-cutter pop.

The frustrating thing is that there are plenty of terrific new bands that are out there. If you check out this year's Lollapalooza lineup, you'll see a bunch of acts (Vampire Weekend, The Decemberists, Of Montreal and Fleet Foxes just to name a few) who are making a lot of interesting and exciting music. I've heard all these artists on sattellite radio, but if I were relying purely on MTV and my local radio stations I might never have heard of them.

That's why you can't listen to the radio. Good music isn't popular among the majority of the youth because the youth are getting uncoultured. You should listen to better bands like Owl City (techno pop amazingness), Rise Against (rock, great bass player), Four Years Strong (pop with hard rock roots) or something similar.

Personally I think you'll find some of the stupidest lyrics in the golden age of rock. How is "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" remotely intelligent? But hey, it's still a good song despite that.

But yeah, since I've discovered all this old music (rock and blues mostly) I'm left feeling like everything I listened to before was stale and over produced. I don't know why, but good modern music is hard to come by.

+1

I annoys me when my friends are looking through my ipod and ask me who Robert Johnson is
