Brian May, originally, but I became frustrated at not being able to play any of his tunes so I put down the instrument for two years. Then I started listening to Nirvana, which, as a beginner, I could play, thus sustaining my interest.

I basically taught myself to play guitar listening to Nirvana albums; I've never had a lesson in my life.

Of course, then I discovered guys like Peter Buck (R.E.M.) and Bob Dylan so I knew that I would have to learn real chords instead of just power chords and how to fingerpick, which is basically my primary style today.

I still don't know much about scales (besides the blues scale, which I can play up and down the neck with ease and without looking at the frets) because I don't listen to any music that requires I know anything about scales. Never been a metal fan and guys like Clapton and SRV kind of bore me. They're just not intense enough, not like Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith, Joe Strummer, Kurt Cobain and the like.
