I'd say Def Leppard is overrated but nobody respects them. So I won't lump them in with Foreigner as guys who play a couple of power chords loud and distorted and pass it off as a guitar solo, nevertheless being awe-inspiring to a lot of my friends in the 80s. Plus, they've got that one-armed drummer. Nobody say Fastball because Miles Zuniga is a hilarious guy and a huge fan of Woody Allen (circa 1985). "We're from France. We're from France."

Ironically guitarist John Mayer in a jam concert in heaven with Jimi and SRV would sound really good. I mean, his playing would fit right in, he'd be right up there with them. Then afterwards they'd simply throw him up against a wall backstage and tell him, "Dude, you stole all our **** and took credit for it!"

All guitarist John Mayer needs to do is rename his act "Tribute to Jimi and Stevie". Oh, but then he'd be just like a hundred other brilliant guitarists who sound exactly the same. Just like Jimi and Stevie.

Understand it takes great talent and skills to do that. Good tribute bands whether for the Beatles or Prince or Kiss or whatever have a lot of skills. They don't suck at all.

Especially since they have the integrity to announce to the world up front what they are.

Come on man, why aren't you dissing SRV for stealing from Jimi? He was stealing from Jimi before Mayer was. I've never heard Mayer take credit for the classic blues sound. You're argument disses Mayer for the same thing SRV did.

Everyone takes something from someone else. Thats the way it works. You hear a style that fits your mindset, add some of your own personality and make it yours. Jimi stole from some of the great old bluesman, Trower stole from Jimi, Stevie stole from Jimi, so what if Mayer stole some from Jimi too? It's all blues. You're gonna hear lots of tones and riffs from others in the blues. Jimi doesn't own that classic "strat and tube amp" blues sound.

Hmm well I don't think a whole lot of music is over rated, because everyone has different tastes. But I do believe that the vast majority of pop (actual pop, not pop-metal and pop-punk) is very much overrated.

On topic of John Mayer, I personally dislike him, and his music. But the only real thing I find overrated about him is the fact that he has a signature guitar, when he does not deserve one yet.

I respect john mayer becasue he is original.
i think sum 41, Greenday, and blink 182 are overated bands as people luv there stuff but its always the same. Blink alwayas do the same old major 5 progression consisting of C, G, A, F.

billy from green day isnt nessarilly good guitarist either as he needs somone to write/play his solos.

sum41's guitarist left. he is good but the band is just a ripoff of everything

^ agreed, i like bands like that, they have good energy and emotion, but the music is way overrated... i could play most green day songs after a few months of guitar playing

hahaha wow... do you think that the world of guitar began and ended with stevie and jimi? riiiiight. listen to albert king and tell me where stevie got some of his licks. Not only did albert influence jimi as well but so did bb king and curtis mayfield. "Just like" Jimi and Stevie huh... what about the Clapton you hear in Mayer's playing? Listen to the record of Mayer with john scofield and tell me you can't hear the influence scofield has on mayer in that song alone.

BB King, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, John Scofield. These are LEGENDS. There is a reason they all have played with John Mayer, they have the intelligence to see his abilities and where he's coming from as an artist.

We're ALL products of whats come before us.

I wish people could appreciate a talented guitarist for what he may be instead of dogging him because somewhere along the their musical career they were influenced by the brilliance that came before him.

And liek i said im from jersey, peopel here flip when i say that. But the fact of the matter is he is an arrogant jerk, and his wife is even worse lol. And also nirvana, hearing nirvana for me is like listenign to a tecaher scratch her fingernails on a chalkboard. Sorry if i upset anyone, but hey its my opinion.

I couldnt agree more. I dont understand why everyone wants to try to put down and act like he is just ripping off music and copying solos note for note. He has become famous writing all his own music and from time to time he will do a cover. He is a great Musician and and Amazing Song Writer.

People hear the solo in "Waiting For The World To Change" and might think that's a super simple solo that a lot of people could play and what's the big deal. It is a simple solo. Slow and not a lot of notes. Point is that the solo it fits the song, which Mayer wrote and which is very good. Lindsey Buckingham, who can definitely play if you hear Out of The Cradle or Say You Will, talks about playing less and playing simpler to support the song. So, you Mayer seems to be doing that as well on the songs he composes (Buckingham had to do it on his exes tunes in Fleetwood Mac, which really had to chap his @**!) and you cannot judge Mayer's playing from song-appropriate simple solos. Like Clapton on "Wonderful Tonight" plays a very cool sounding very, very simple lead that fits the song. At other times and places, Clapton can jam like nobody else, as good live as recorded unlike Buckingham or Page, who are excellent but more studio musicians. There's a video on Google where Clapton and Beck join Page on stage after he muffs an "F" chord. Thunk. Yet, Page is a fantastic guitar player, creative, and a composer. Live, Mayer sounds very good, notes fast and fluid, and as a composer he's written already a lot of catchy and memorable tunes. Sure, Clapton sounds more . . . you know. Lot's of us have a long time before we're BBs age and so we can get better.
