I honestly cant say anyone is overrated. Some bands or artists may not be appealing to you but they became famous because they have a following and the music they make speaks to their fans in some way. If you dont like an artist just dont listen to them or support them. They got famous without your support and will not miss your support. Its pretty simple if you dont like it dont listen to it.
This is something I completely agree with, even Brittney has her fans, but there are certain peolpe and groups that the so called experts have labeled as genuises and so great that I just don't get PERSONALLY. I realize everybody has their preferences and each one of ours is different. That is what make forums like this so great.....OPINIONS.

I think a lot of the hair and early metal bands (aka Kiss) are overrated. A lot of what gets me off on a band is if they value the show more than they value the music.

I'd argue that KISS is UNDER-rated since they don't claim to be about music at all but really about show and lifestyle. Which they used to deliver on hugely.

Whereas Mayer is supposed to be about Jimi and SRV-level musical genius and songwriting and singing brilliance, none of which he delivers the goods on.

Not to say I wouldn't be knocked out by his guitaristry if I walked into a bar. I have and I have heard a guy at least as good, and I was knocked out by the guy. Who also does not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Charlie Christian, Django or Wes Montgomery.

But Kevin Eubanks, man, that dude is scaaaary! He is waaaaay up the ladder and is the most UNDERrated dude out there.

Ironically guitarist John Mayer in a jam concert in heaven with Jimi and SRV would sound really good. I mean, his playing would fit right in, he'd be right up there with them. Then afterwards they'd simply throw him up against a wall backstage and tell him, "Dude, you stole all our **** and took credit for it!"

All guitarist John Mayer needs to do is rename his act "Tribute to Jimi and Stevie". Oh, but then he'd be just like a hundred other brilliant guitarists who sound exactly the same. Just like Jimi and Stevie.

Understand it takes great talent and skills to do that. Good tribute bands whether for the Beatles or Prince or Kiss or whatever have a lot of skills. They don't suck at all.

Especially since they have the integrity to announce to the world up front what they are.

Hmmm... I tend to agree with the idea that calling anyone overrated is kinda a waste of time... But. Damn, I think any popular music is about terrible. All the emo/screamo bands are repetitive and awful... Most interesting modern bands hide themselves in the genre, Indie.

Aerosmith, Sabbath, AC/DC...and pretty much any other riff based rock band...it's all just schlock garbage.

Aside from him guitar playing John Mayer is one of the best song writers out there right now. He is not only playing guitar on all his songs but writing and producing his own records. He is one of the few talented Musicians out there right now that is making it and he is doing it his way and writing all his own music. If you dont respect that what more do you want from an artist?

Sorry, I'm not a guitar player so that type of crap drives me nuts.
It's all so contrived and sing-songy ...but we all have our tastes! There's a place for everyone, and more importantly an audience for everyone.

And, yeah...i'm shocking like a 2 prong tube head.

To me, playing your own version of a good song is no big deal, in fact, it's getting old, that is, unless you can provide some really good improvement on the one before you (like Stevie did with Jimi's stuff). I'm more impressed with people that can hit Jimi and Stevies stuff note for note (now that's very rare) and put the same amount of feeling in it, than somebody that just does their own take on it.

One thing I hate, is seeing bands here and there at shows, festivals or whatever pull off a cover of some highly popular song and then not do it right. They half-a$$ their way through it. I say that if you can't do it right, don't do it at all. The number one song this always happens to is "Sweet Home Alabama", I wish I had a nickel everytime those solo's were left out.

John Mayer's a good guitar player. If you play the blues, listen to him and you'll see he is very good. Sure, he's taking stuff from the other guys before him, just like they did in their time. Nobody invented the blues. Everyone is taking stuff from the prior greats.

One thing I respect about Mayer, he says he's not that good at solos. If you check him out on the GMA clip, he plays his solo hard but it's not Clapton, who simply has it and everyone's always known that. Mayer's a good player though and he writes a lot of catchy stuff that's blues based which I really like, because it's rare. Maybe he's overhyped but I don't hear him a lot on the radio between the Maroon 5, Killers and others. Mayer's good.

Can Maroon 5 be overrated when nobody respects them? For overrated, I have to say Cobain on the guitar playing because I just don't like that total mud.
