Have you come close to achieving your idea of 'Perfect Tone'? If so, please give us an idea of how and why you've decided that that's the tone for you. I'd be very interested in what you guys have to say :)

I think I had it at one point. My Squier with Seymour Duncan patb-1's in it and the Mesa DR I had to sell was my favorite of all time. I just can't exactly say that my Fender amps quite measured up to my old Mesa. But we're talking about a HRDv and a couple of Eighty Fives. Not to say that Fender amps don't measure up. Just not the one's I personally own now.

I do like my Fender amps though. They sound good. But my grail has already came and went. I guess until I find a new grail.

I have a 2007 Gibson SG special which I have modified. I wanted to have a good clean tone but also a killer lead tone. So I adjusted my neck pickup height very low and my bridge pickup higher. So with my Blues Jr., I dial in some moderate breakup, roll back the volume on my neck pickup, then I switch to my bridge for lead, and MAN what a sound!!!

Set up your guitar just the way you like.

Plug into a decent amp.

Practice.

One man's tone is another man's tone turd.
I've heard incredible tones from old Silvertone, Valco and Danelectro amps and Teisco Del Rey and other low end student model guitars and amps, and just plain bad tones from boutique amps and two thousand dollar guitars.

Your tone is up yo you. You don't need great expensive equipment. Just a decent knowledge of technique. What matters is if it sounds great to you, and you can express how you feel in your music, the label on your equipment means nothing. Give me an old Champ, a cord and a playable guitar and I'm good to go. I don't need boutique cords, amps and pedals. I don't care about the Gibson or Fender "sound", just My sound.

Cool. That will put you miles ahead of the people who think that "tone" is something you can buy in the Shiny Object Department.

Or were you expressing some kind of mild irritation?

I love a nice clean neck tone on a big blackface amp, like a Twin Reverb. So full and sweet.

My idea of perfect tone is when I can plug any guitar into any amp with any pedal make it sound good. For that, I have to work on my hands.

I have my perfect tone. MIA strat, refinished body (was thick-ass black paint, now vintage stained with very thin coat of poly). JB Jr/Silver Lace/Blue Lace direct into a Mesa Boogie Rectoverb.

It's the sound I had in my head for years, and has all the tones I want out of it.

Getting a good tone is mostly in your hands though. To get a perfect ton, you need great gear matched with your hands, and the "right" gear for you.

YOU KNOW THE SAYING ITS ALL IN THE HANDS.Well I believe that .I mean good equipment of course is going to help ,but some days I would come down and everything was set as the day before and for some reason I would not like how the tone of things sounded though nothing changed except my frame of mind or mood.

In this opinon...

...perfect tone is when you and your guitar and amp are in synch. A player can have many, many 'perfect' tones. Especially, for many different types of music.

I'm pretty close the "tone in my head". For the most part I like the Fenderish clean but I wanted something thicker, with more girth and character. I also wanted a thick, overdriven tone that could be pushed with minimal pedals. I feel that if I need a bunch of pedals to get my tone, I have the wrond amp :P Found both with my Mesa Lonestar, Exotic BB preamp and Barber LTD. Great clean channel and amazingly versatile drive channel, both of which respond well to the pedals I use.
