Ah yes: in the new Obama era even the UK doesn't have to get voted last anymore. (Does anyone know what I'm talking about?)

No, the Eurovision song contest doesn't get much coverage in the US.

Are you saying that the UK doesn't do well in the contest? Am I correct in thinking that the last time the UK won was with Rock And Roll Part Two by Gary Glitter?

A Classic. Not Lordi, but a classic.

In the land of Confusion (my place) it was over 100 degrees yesterday and supposed to be 105 today.
I spent 5 hours in the Emergency Room last night and am now on a month long anti-biotic treatment for a severe bladder/prostate infection. I feel like crap.

It's all deeply political. Till changes this year the voting system permitted countries to vote for one another in traditional blocs, which they did (and still did again this year to some extent). So the East Europeans all voted for each other, the Baltic countries the same, and most bizarrely the new Balkan countries, who had been trying so hard to murder one another only a few years ago, all vote merrily for their neighbors.

But more than that: after the invasion of Iraq America's name was mud far and wide. Since in Eurovision it was obviously not possible for people to show their feelings by voting against America they voted against America's ally, the UK, instead. I believe we got 0 points at least one year, which is almost impossible. Everyone understood it to be our smack on the wrist for choosing our friends across the Atlantic.

And we upset them all even further by laughing our heads off in return. In some parts the Eurovision Song Contest is apparently taken terribly seriously. Here it is regarded as the cheesiest pap that ever existed, and traditionally goes out on the BBC with a hilarious and wildly sarcastic voiceover.

Ah, the unifying force of culture...

Cheers - C

Nikworld has been about avoiding guitars and music all day long. Recline the sofa, latest starwars novel at the arm, eldest daughter bringing a steady flow of teacups and biscuits. Hiding under a blanket with youngest daughter (she thinks its the height of entertainment) and generaly lounging, loafing and lolling.

I love sundays. Particularly when everyone thinks i'm tired.
