It's music designed to appeal to the masses. I don't care for it myself, but there is a reason they call it "Pop Music" (the pop is short for popular)

It's simple
It's straight forward
It's usually a sappy love song of one variety or another

The idea is to make money and it works. Follow the formula and you too can make big bucks.

At the risk of incurring wrath, listen to the Beatles, most of it is Pop twaddle. Very successful pop twaddle to be sure but it's still pop.

No wrath. I just think you're wrong.

Everything created for "the masses," as you so amusingly call "them," is pop music. That goes for all forms of rock, R&B, hip-hop... it's all "pop music." Only rockers like to pretend that the music they enjoy is art, but the music "the masses" like is "twaddle." Make no mistake: the rock music you enjoy was made for and consumed by "the masses," of which you are one. It's pop. Ask any actual musician - say, classical or jazz - and they'll tell you so. (If i have "misunderestimated" your musical taste, then my bad.)

So "simple," "straight forward" and "sappy" are not parts of the definition of pop. Those are usually symptoms of BAD pop music. Good pop music - say, "If I Fell" of "Cry Me A River" or "Allison," something at that level - is not simple or sappy.

The Beatles obviously pushed the musical boundaries of pop, both with their early and highly-musical moptop tunes through their pioneering in the studio and well-beyond.

Now, perhaps you feel that all music that isn't loud, fast and aggressive is "sappy." I know a lot of electric guitar players have this problem, so if that's what you're saying, then... well, go ahead on.

There are a lot of bubble-gum-cheewing teenyboppers who have or have access to money.

Bubble gum music is a way to separate them from that money.

Think of the music as an extraction tool.

Yup, it's music designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. It appeals to a broad spectrum by not having much (if any) substance. It's light, fluffy, and well boring.
