certain bands are good live like Stereophonics and David Gilmour, others like Bob Dylan i prefer to hear back in the 60s not today. overall, i prefer studio, but live gives the feel that theres no modifications to the sound. its all straight forwad.

I am a BIG fan of live music, both recorded and in person. I always felt that with enough time in the studio, just about any band could put out a decent product. The real test was how they sounded live. I know some bands don't translate well to the stage, I just tend to gravitate towards bands that do. In fact, when I see a new band live and then purchase their CD, I'm usually a little disappointed because they can never capture the same energy as the live performance.

I agree with Neil Young, "Live music is better. Bumper stickers should be issued."

I like live music for the experience and studio for quality. Both provide a different aspect of the band/perfomer.

Some live records are really good too. I spent a good chunk of the weekend playing and replaying Johnny Cash's Live at Folsom and that one stands out to me as a good live album.

On the contrary: the ability to make a great record is a skill just as live performing is. Most bands could spend forever in the studio and never produce a listenable collection of songs.

Some bands sound almost the same live as studio--which can be good or bad--depending on the band.
But live tends to carry a bit more energy, and overall can help avoid over-producing.

I've heard bands that sound tame or bland on studio recordings, because it's overproduced--but live it has an urgency & emotion that makes them sound much better.

Sometimes the studio recordings were done when the band was younger & not as good, or they were rushed in the studio.

For example the Killer Dwarfs--a Canadian band. Some of the studio recordings are good, but many seem too tame--but live--it's like it's a different band.

They have so much more energy, and the songs sound better.

The videos are fun.

Check out some video here-(studio & live)

Mostly studio though-

I am a huge fan of live performances. Probably a third of my music collection is live stuff. You can't beat the energy, enthusiasm, and spontaneity of a stage show.

Live music is suffering around here. It is so hard to compete with DJ's and Kara-joke shows. For the tavern owners it's just simple business, pay a DJ $200 and have a full bar or take the same full bar and pay a band $500 for the night.

People like bands but most don't want to pay a cover just because there's a band.

I always prefer a band but I grew up with a father that played and am a musician myself so I'm pretty bias.

Live music has at least some soul and some lessening of the hyper-over-production of most recorded music.

A few words come to mind.

Authenticity

Genuine

Real

Atmosphere

Vibe

One live performance album ( Frampton comes Alive ) was epic, Most others not as good as the studio version.

But Thanks to the local Casino - I get to see about 20 live bands for free a year , Just saw the band -(The Sweet) - and they just rocked so well I bought the live CD.

It's kind of like going to a baseball game, which in my opinion is fun because you experience it with tons of other people

I have always found that most bands play with more excitement and energy during a live show that add more passion to their music. Springsteen live is different than The Eagles. Springteen is a dynamo and so is the legenday E Street Band, The Eagles are spot on with the music and spot on comparable to their albums. Both are great. I think one of the best live albums I ever heard was Little Feat "Waiting for Columbus" Live. One of the best produced and sounding live albums of the late 70's early 80's.
