I'm assuming this is a Strat or Tele? Either way, you feed the strings through the back of the guitar (on a Strat you may want to remove the cover), and through the saddles - the metal pieces.

I'm bored enough to help. First, remove the back plastic cover with the 6 screws. I remove all of the strings at once. A string winder/unwinder helps a lot here, it will make the whole process go much faster.

Pull the strings from the back of the guitar. If you have a needlenose plier, you can clip the ends of the strings where they were wrapped around the pegs and pull them straight out the back.

Now, I start with the thickest E-string and go to the small e-string. Slide the thick e-string through the back, pass it all the way through the guitar and inside of the metal saddle. Pull it gently towards the tuning pegs. Wrap the string counter clockwise around the peg. Depending on what type of tuning pegs you have, I wrap a full wrap around the peg, then go through the hole (under the wrap you just made). If you have slotted pegs, this will be slightly different. Wind until you feel some tension. As a beginner, I would constantly pick the string and tune, until you feel you are getting close. My first couple of string changes, I broke the high E-string because I made it too tight without checking the pitch as I was tightening the tuning peg.

Continue with the rest of the strings. When you are satisfied. Take your index finger and thumb and slide underneath each string and tug slightly up. Do this at the top of the nut, and down by the bridge. This will stretch the new strings and help keep your guitar in tune.

Good luck! Buy extra strings, because it is not a fun time when you break a string, and have to wait until the next day to try again.

Interesting. I've heard don't remove all the strings at once because it'll hurt the neck tension.

If you have a Strat with a trem, don't remove all the strings at the same time. It will be easier to tune. It really isn't a good idea to remove all the strings just to change them. The neck can get a little out of adjustment. Not always but it can. It depends on a lot of factors like string gauge.

Don't remove all the strings at once. Just go in order, from thickest to thinnest. Don't forget which ones you did.

Like this:

remove 6th
attach new 6th
remove 5th
attach new 5th
remove 4th
attach new 4th
remove 3rd
attach new 3rd
remove 2nd
attach new 2nd
remove 1st
attach new 1st

I always remove all my strings at once. I like to clean my fretboard when I change strings. Never had any problems. However I can see how it would be easier to tune up changing only one at a time.

I just picked up 2 used guitars - one for me, one for my daughter.

I removed all of the strings on the Ovation, then cleaned and polished the guitar, replaced the battery, and then restrung it - no neck adjustment needed.

I did the same to a Squier Affinity Strat - no issues, it's Trem was screwed down tight - I'll re-float it after my daughter learns some more on the Strat.

On my guitars, I've done it one string at a time, and all-at-once, it depends on how dirty the guitar has gotten, really.

+1 here too. Depends how much cleaning I need to do. Also whether I need to lemmon oil the neck...it is much easier to do without the strings in the way.
