Guys I know this is a Fender forum, but I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with Danelectro guitars? I may be considering to buy one soon. Thanks :D

Check out Warmoth and Ed Roman. I'm sure they have dirt on those guitars. Most times it is just the body wood that needs ugrading. But it all depends on what you want the guitar for.

Good luck in your decision.

I have an original 1957 U1. Very cool sounding guitar that plays really well.

Cool sounding Lipstick's Would never be My main guitar but fun to have and play at times. I have thought of buying one myself in the past but just never have. I have put Lipstick pickups in a strat for someone though.

I went to their web page and checked those guitars because when I read Danelectro I was just coming down from the mountains (it's a saying in Iceland meaning "totally clueless gosh" ).... and I have to say for my taste...

...their are really really ugly...

... so ugly... that they were actually kind of cool 8)

Exactly. They are pretty retro looking with their 50's/60's style. And I figured it would be a pretty neat addition to my collection and fun to play around with. 8)

Hey hottrod, I bought this a couple years ago, and like you I figured another guitar for my collection. And it was left-handed. It was cheap (just under $200). The "lipstick" pickups do have a really cool sound to them, but the damn thing just won't stay in tune.

A daughter had one just like in the photo. She traded up to an MIM Stratocaster and dumped the Dano.

Tried it a number of times. Personally, 'could not get into its vibe. We never made beautiful music together or wanted to go steady.

To each their own..

Whatever s/he does, I have to say I hope the OP does not follow your advice.

As to Ed Roman-- don't go there! He's a huckster, and a not particularly honest one. He's been slapped down on more than one occasion for misrepresenting what he sells, by people selling the real deal.

As to Warmoth, good product, but the entire concept of replacing the "body wood" in Dano's shows a gross misunderstanding of the Danelectro concept. Most Dano's don't have body wood-- they're just crappy composite chipboard type crap, with a hollow interior. The point of a Danelectro is, it does NOT matter. With the lipstick pickups and the semi/hollow body, you get a cool tone. Using a sold body wouldn't be anything like a Dano.

The Dano reissues are really cool. I'd stay away from the ones with the wooden non-intonatable bridges, but otherwise, go to town. Lipsticks rock. Whatever you do, do NOT even consider putting a new body on one. That would be full of fail.

Thanks for saying that. I thought the same thing when I read that "replace the body wood" comment.

For being made out of masonite, they can sound very good (read some of the reviews of the reissues). Who needs tone woods when you have decent lipstick pickups?

If you get a good deal on one and it's just an addition to the collection I'd say go ahead. They have a unique sound. I've played a few but never really wanted to own one. I certainly wouldn't use it as my main guitar.

HR , Bro , Danelectro started out as a cheap immitation of a guitar and has managed to keep those standards until now , whatever you had planned for the Danelectro you can do with another guitar that is at least a little better quality.

Love dano's. The whole vibe of their guitars, amps and pedals is a testement to cheese. Decent players and great for that beat band sound. Love em.

It was Jimmy Page that really put Danelectros on the radar screen for me, personally. It was Page for me that really made me find out what these very non-Gibson-like guitars were all about. If I recollect properly, Page used one in Zep, and then quite aot for his work with the Firm. Being sooooo much lighter than a Gibson Les Paul Standard must've been refreshing to him when used live. Look at the below pic. Page is playing slide, right?
