Me think leadplayer must also be good rhythmplayer.
If you're freind is any good you should like his playing.
Ask him to slow down and try to say something with his solo's.
One good note is better then zillion bad ones.
TRY LEAD YOURSELF !

I kind of like playing rhythm, but have always been the lead guitarist in every band I have played in. Just seemed to work out that way.

Your description is brief, but sounds like you and the soloing guitarist are not working closely musically.
If he is just waiting for those 8 bars to go wild, I would say he is antiquated.

For my part, I think guitar soloing has been stereo-typed. It is a curious thing,
because this doesn´t happen with horn players or keyboardists.

In retrospective, I much more enjoy Malcom Young´s contribution to rock than
Angus´ work on lead guitar.

Is your friend playing lead for the wrong reasons?
Ask him point-blank! :D

One common thing to find among guys who seem to be soloing all day, is they skipped the early phase of learning true note values and a strong bodily rythmic feel. This kind of player will tend to precipitate the drummer, if the drummer is not well grounded. Just floating speedy phrases ontop of the tune means squat.

Perhaps you could make him listen to a good soloist of your choice and point out what you expect.

I believe in working hard at rythm and branch out from there, so you may be in a better position to grow as a guitarist.

Yes, it's hard to tell exactly what you mean, and you don't mention what style of music you play. But if you mean he is just improvising from beginning to end, then I think you should tell him to do something a little more structured, like coming up with riffs or themes that get repeated throughout the song. Then he can save his blazing solos for a couple of tasty spots.

With the exception of about 15 minutes in the late 60s I have always played lead in every group I was in except for one group where both guitarists shared lead duties. When I do Hendrix covers I have to switch from lead to rythm and back such as in songs like Foxy Lady,Spanish Castle Magic,Hey Joe,Purple Haze etc. I really love doing Hendrix covers because they allow me to switch up which really cuts down on my hands getting tired and/or paining.

One could consider "lead" an outdated term...kinda, in these modern days it seems we play guitar that combines both.

Love,
Nile Rodgers

easy answer- rhythm

my first band (back in 1966 ) needed a rhythm player. my teacher showed me a lot of great techniques, and it worked well for me over the years.

when i play out now, i defer to the other guitarist who is way better than me on lead. i do get comments on my rhythm playing, and i have no problem being the "support".
