I must say how amusing i'm finding some of the views regarding long drawn out guitar solo's in this discussion.

So, I put it to you, that those guitarists here who have issues with indulgent guitar solo's, have never developed the skill required to perform soloing to a professional standard.

Those professional, 'working' guitarists here that DO possess that hard earned ability to carry off a solo for more than 2 mins AND have 99% of the audience yelling for more, know the rewards that go with pulling off such a performance.

Basically, in my humble opinion, those who $@!&* about long guitar solos...... Go and find yourselves a box of tissues and a copy of Bad Moon Rising. Slap your three chords together, lock yourselves in your bedrooms and let us REAL guitarists do the hard work for you.

I like guitar solos. In fact it's the main reason I took up the guitar. The only solos I don't like are the long drawn out solos that have no meaning to the song.
Jim Root and Mick Thompson of Slipknot are actually pretty good guitarists. Although I can only listen to that 'chunka chunka chunka' sound for so long.

I solo all the time. Of course it's because nobody wants to subject themselves to what amounts to torture according to the Geneva Conventions but it is a solo none the less.

YZFJoe what we play in private and public are two very different things. Looking at my myspace page you'd think i was a 3 chord punk basher. I'm not and never have been. I am a gigging guitarist and will play whatever kind of music allows me to enjoy that lifestyle. I dont like recording, i dont compose much these last 6 years. I do however like to play live and have earnt enough out of it to pay for my various holidays (gigs to the missus) abroad and everything being off the leash in foreign lands entails. I certainly dont need anyone to tell me the exact opposite of what i've found crowds wanting for the last 20 years everywhere from melbourne to glasgow. Please take no notice of my previous comment it was written in temper and i shouldnt as a modest person reacted like i did.

It all comes down to if you are in it for the money you have to do what sells not always what you want and music now days is different then what many of us older people no from the past. The generation that is spending all the money on 4 minute pops songs don't want Deep Purple 10 minute runs. Sure there are a lot of us that like it still but you have to look at who is spending and for what. When your noodling then you can let you artistic side come out.

On a serious note, as soloing goes, in my jazz band we frequently solo. Some pieces have a featured instrument/player others rotate by sections and everyone gets a shot. They can be quite long at times or as short as 5-10 seconds. It's all about what fits the mood of the room. By no means is the art of improvisation and soloing dead.

Ah but Joe the art of good jazz is a sad rarity. Much like my comments on Jeff Beck. He's a instrumental composer the guitar in his music is much a replacement for words. Its not loads of pentatonic mayhem or harmonic minor wizardry. Its constructed and concise phrasings linked together to carry a song where there are no words. Most instrumental jazz is much the same, with the odd show off bit. Not just 15minutes a song of random whee whooo whiiiizzz noises.
