i feel dumb asking...

can i teach my self to sing? how?

i always tought it was sort of something you were born with

Your vocal chords are muscles. You can work them out, improve their accuracy, and you can teach yourself to sing. I sing, and I think what gave me it was I would just sing along to my music all the time as I grew up. Doing that got me the role of Joseph (and his amazing technicolour dreamcoat) a few years back at college.

Yes you may laugh. But it was fun, and the chicks dug me. I have a picture actually, of me in the coat.

Not at all. Some people just grasp the idea and control of it earlier than others. I taught myself how to sing. It took a long time though. Getting lessons will shorten the time it takes. I took lessons for about 1-month, but at $70 per hour on a weekly basis, I just couldn't afford it.

I started out by trying really hard to sing like Layne Staley. I didn't exactly accomplish that, but it made me focus on trying to control my voice.. If you're serious about it and experiment with it enough, you'll find that you can do more with your voice than you thought you could. Just make sure that if you feel your voice hurting, you're most likely not doing it right. Some people think that you need to push your voice 'till it gets hoarse to build up your vocal cords. But that's a dangerous idea. If you feel anything strange (like a strange little pain on the side of your larynx) , just stop and experiment later when you're not feeling it anymore.

I'm in a Reggae band now, and just starting to get the feel for singing Reggae. It's a whole different ball-game. But the song on my page is from the band I was in before joining HaleAmano. I wrote the song, play guitar in it, and I'm singing it.

OK? yes you can teach yourself to sing. the things people are born with are ability and potential , its what you do with those gifts when you accept that you possess them that is up to you . if you play guitar we should be hearing some vocals from you in the future.
