I have been playing for a long time and the one part of my playing that lags is when I step outside my normal style of playing, classic rock/blues and play really fast alternate picked shred style guitar my right hand just lags behind for some reason. My left hand has no problem it is my picking hand that just has trouble.I have a friend that can shred fine yet he has trouble bending to the correct pitch which to me is simple yet my shortcoming to him is simple. What problems do you guys find in your playing

hi straycat,

that's normal when you practise new things outside of your normal playing.
excercise the new stile (lick, riff etc) step by step with a metronome. begin slow that left and right hand are coordinated. if you played it correct play the same a bit faster and so on. make small pauses between the next faster steps. in the pause your brain learned.

good luck and cheers :D

Great advice from Tickle. Your picking hand is as important if not more important in playing fast phrases. Heed the advice and practice with a metronome or a drum machine. I got the alesis S-16 and its a darn good sounding item for $140. Has a lot of preset is several different styles. A bit more fun then a metronome. Remember learning to play in time is so important. Speed will come in time.

For me its some of breaking the rut of the same old chord progressions when composing stuff. I try sitting down and learning new chord voicings but my attention spand of a knat kicks in and I drift off to noodling around.

The thing that irks me is that I have been playing 30 years and when I get a piece of music or song I want to learn it takes me no longer than a day.But if it is a VAI,GILBERT.SOME SATCH pieces that I dig I can get all the notes and runs but if I go to play in time I lag behind.Hey maybe I am never going to be able to get my right hand up to the task but the good part is learning all those insane licks and throwing them into what I play and making them my own just by having to play tham slower but I think if I put a good enough time into practicing thaem I will be able to pull them off at the proper BPMs

+1 It's only natural man. But all I can say is that I do my own thing and my own songs. Thats how I keep up with my playin'. :)
