when beck joined the yardbirds he was so broke, he had sold his first Strat, and didn't have a guitar. Yardbirds management owned a red Tele , that Clapton was using up until he left the band. jeff used that, but didn't like it, and sold it. He "borrowed' a tele ('59 or 60 he says,)from a guy in one of his old bands and didn't ever return it. he also bought an 'esquire' shortly after, he used both on various recordings, but the Tele was on 'Heart Full of Soul'(my personal favorite yardbirds recording,) when he left the yardbirds with bad feelings all around, he left the tele behind, and Page started using it. Page painted the dragon on it himself, and used it into his Zep years.
