I go to a few different stores.

In the past i have bought gear from other musicians that I know, in private sales. I got a guitar from a guy in one band we played a gig after, because they needed gas money to drive 300 miles home, after partying their earnings away at the bar the night before.

I got some stuff from people in classified ads, and I now even have 1 I bought from a guy on Craig's list, he lived outside my city, so he actually drove in, i got him to meet me at a restaurant not far from my house, I am paranoid about strangers from stuff like that, i don't want some guy with a cheap guitar casing out my place, to see what else I have.

The only guitar I have bought so far was bought in Hljóðfærahúsið í Reykjavik Iceland.

I will probably buy the next one there to. 8)

I buy mine in person--I want to touch & play the guitar first--it has to speak to me, and tell me it's my guitar.
Each of the ones I've bought have done that.

I've bought new & used--all from guitar stores.
But I've looked at classified ads--both in papers in the old days, and online.

Never bought one that way though--although I have friends who got some nice ones that way--just watch out for scams, etc.

House of Guitars, in most cases. Guitar Center if they have a used instrument I want, or other local stores if they advertise something I want. I'll order online if local stores (Guitar Center or otherwise) don't have what I need, or they offer me some deal, which they always seem to be doing.

Hello trj 1393,

Music stores and private sales,
is where I get all my guitars.
I like the hands on & the face to face,
never purchased any guitars online.

Cheers.

Mainly Pawn Shops. But my last 2 were from e-bay. Can't find Stagemasters in pawn shops much.

2 from shops both a 100+ mile travel. 2 from ebay both played before purchase. 1 from a friend, 1 from a local shop (its a unplayable ornament).
1 from a shop 14years ago some 90 miles away. One online (unplayable junk).

Of my purchases the ones that i put effort into buying are the best. The one from a friend is pretty much how i'd have any guitar play.
Patience is the key to guitar buying, when you rush you lose out.

Léro Dreadnought - small guitar store (now gone) in the East Village, NYC in 1973
Squier '51 - via samash.com
Squier Standard Strat - via guitartrader.com
Fender VGStrat - won here, sent from Fender HQ :P
Ovation Standard Balladeer - via barter with a friend, picked it up I went down to see The Dead with him.

I keep looking at the local shops, but haven't had much luck in spotting something I both want and can afford. :?

Except for my Musicmaster bass, I bought the other 3 on Ebay. After having played the same type and knowing what I was looking for it just takes patience sometimes.

From the time I played a Fender Montara at GC in Chicago that they wanted $650 for, to the time I snagged mine off Ebay for $250 including hard shell case was about 2 1/2 years.

I look at stores when I can, not many pawn shops around Central WI.
