I personally think the Doors were a great band. Jim Morrison may not have been a great singer, but overall the music was terrific and it really captured the spirit of the times. I think they're given just about the right amount of credit, in terms of their place in rock history.

As others have mentioned, this stuff is so subjective you could argue endlessly over it. I love the Police, for example, but I know people who can't stand them. There was a columnist, meanwhile, for the Buffalo News a year or two who received ot a ton of hate mail after she called the Beatles overrated. Go figure!

Jim Morrison was a great singer! Are you kidding his voice was amazing

I think Jim Morrison was an awesome front man and his style totally worked for the Doors. Purely in terms of technical ability, though, I don't think he was anything special. His range was really limited and he did a lot of screaming and growling to cover it up. It's hardly a fair criticism since I'm pretty sure he wasn't a trained singer. Just the same, I think there are a lot of rock vocalists with much stronger voices.

This has to be the most rediculas tangent of a post I have seen here. Now the Europeans are attacking the Americans and vise versa.

Didn't the Allied Powers win WWII? Didn't that include America, France, Russia and England? Did we not win win it together? Wasn't this before 99% of us were even born?

Like them or not, The Doors were a great band. Jim Morrison was one of the most charismatic front men in history. The only frontman that came close to him, and maybe surpassed him, are David Lee Roth and Elvis Presley. A good front man can carry an average band to heights. With that, the doors were competent musicians, and Robbie Krieger was a good guitarist, and was using exotic scales, while most guitarists were playing loud distorted blues scales. He is underrated, because he did not turn up crazy loud, burn and smash his guitars to get attention. If you have a brain and listen, you will find that he was a good player. Jimmy Page was sloppy as they get, Robbie never played that sloppy, but somehow Jimmy was better??? Now, I love Jimmy Page, very innovative, and my Favorite band is Zeppelin...but I am trying to make a point.

My opinion, is during this Brittish invasion era, there were some American bands that simply trumped the British bands, which were more of a craze than substance. The Doors, Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, Metallica, and several others showed the world that the undisputed best music in the world comes from America, while the British invasion bands that were inspired by American blues and made a name for themselves, but mostly were imposters and posers...just kidding  I love the British stuff too, and am proud to be an ally with them...I never realized why so much hate is still harbored by past events. And some of you guys across the pond should let go of the hate. I have a Scottish friend here in America, that cannot stand to even hear a Englishman talk...its silly. If he hates his neighbor so bad, I can only imagine what he thought about us in America. Funny though, after living here for a few years, he did all he could to stay and never go back to Scottland, despite his families attempt to convince him he belonged in Scottland. His mother made a point at my dinner table to ask me and my wife about our past, and living close to our families ect. and told her son, you should be more like firstrat. Funny because he was enjoying a great level of success and found his wife here in America. You would think she would be happy for him, he did not have the opportunity in Scottland to do what he did here.

It's like me hating everyone from Illinois. I know there is some deep past, but the past is the past

Are you Brits really mad about movies made in America that glorify Americans role in WWII? Please, its a movie, what do you expect? Can we be friends instead? I like the British, I don't want that to change because of comments made here.

Remember, one of the reasons America exists in its current form, is because of some british desires to move away from the oppression of the Kingdom...we are the british common mans dream...The American Revolution, is actually a age old british desire to be free of the oppression and unjust rule of the monarch. We cannot help that those british desires and ideals built the greatest nation in the world. We cannot control the jealousy the rest of the world has for us, it makes them hate us, because we are what the rest of the world wants to be. Perfect we are not....but still the greatest

Amen firststrat you are 100% correct!

By "America", I presume you mean NORTH America which includes Canada. It would be a shame to let slip from memory the fact that Canadians declared war against Germany in 1939. The Americans wanted nothing to do with a "European" war, and didn't really get involved till Pearl Harbour in 1941.

In this opinion, the Doors were highly influential to the music of the time, which was evolving with (looking-backward from 40+ years later), amazing pace.

They may have "shot their wad" fairly early (total creativity / talent bank account), but The Doors certainly in this mind, contributed a melodic / rhythmic / MOOD style which at the beginning of their carrer, was razor-sharp cutting edge.

Im good, brother. I see you are still in the mix around here

Actually, I like the Bears, expect when they play the Packers. I like the Steelers too, BTW. But Im not a huge Eagles fan. Cant get with those helmet logos.

Funny Jim Morrison story for all you....Back in my days (years) of "fast living", I sort of idolized Morrison. I was already living his lifestyle, literally...mediocre philosophy guy....opening doors of perception.....pointing out all of lifes hypocracies througth self destruction....I was walking to my favorite barstool and I found cardboard stand-up poster of Jim Morrison from when he pulled off the leather pants, no shirt, bead swaggar deal. Anyway, a chick walking down the street noticed me carrying it and stopped me to ask "where did you go to get a poster of yourself made?"

She thought I was Jim Morrison, or that Jim Morrison was me. Must have been the sunken eyes, dark rings under the eyes and malnutrition. We dated a few times.......

well i try not to be but i'm a man who doesnt mind
others opinions on a subject but when you want to take a
simple opinion and try to make it a fact i have
problems with that even when you can prove its just a opinion.
i enjoy reading your post jay because not only
do you voice a opinion but you also back what you
say with facts and most of this site is simply opinion's
and very little facts. have a great weekend jay.

Hey I think this was the best thread yet.It is good to stir things up and to get things heated that makes good debating.Truthfully the low point was when people started to move away from the music and start to get political that had no rhyme or reason on hear .Everyone IS entitled to there opinions and there is nothing I put up that was looked up or made up .It is my opinion plus facts. Now for my final words the Beatles were and always be the greatest band EVER.The Stones are one of the greatest bands ever and so were the DOORS.

Yaa. Everyone has different taste as to what they like.We all are not going to agree on the greatest for some may see a band mentioned and think no way. I cant follow some of the thinking of some but thats where taste comes into it and the age of the person will often influence. I like many styles not unusual for me to listen to Buck Owens and Thin Lizzy in the same night.
