just wondering what you all think. what bands never got the credit they deserved. i myself would rate blind melon as one of the most underrated bands of my time. i am a huge blind melon fan. between shannon hoons song writing/singing and chris a rogers guitar playing together blind melons music was great. if you have never heard blind melon or have only heard no rain please check them out they where very talented. make sure to listen to how the guitar players play together simply great guitar work between two players

Definitely can't go wrong with Blind Melon. I'm going to go with Xtc. They were never that popular in the US but one of my favorite guitar solos is from the song "Books are Burning", the last track of their album Nonesuch. In general, the guitar playing is fairly understated on this record, but the bass lines are great and the subject matter is as relevant as ever.

The Doves!

An alternative band from Manchester, the Doves have had a couple of #1 albums in the UK. They're virtually unknown, however, in the US. I like them a lot -- they have a sort of a lush, ethereal sound.

In the realm of classic rock, I think the Kinks are a somewhat underrated band here in the US. They've got a ton of awesome songs, but we only ever hear 'You Really Got Me' and 'Lola' on the radio.

I'll just say

Anathema

Vincent has one of the best voices I"ve ever heard, and Danny is such an amazing song writer..they deserve a much bigger following in the US.

I gotta say the Styx. This band never got the recognition nor the respect it resolutely deserved.

+1

My favourite band is an obscure club-circuit rock-folk-punk outfit from Winnipeg called the Weakerthans. I've never played their music for someone and not received a good reaction.

Good stuff! I think I've actually heard these guys played on EDGE 102 in Toronto. Canada seems to be a fertile breeding ground for a lot of terrific alternative and indie rock these days...

Just checked out the :30 samples of their new CD, Kingdom of Rust. Interesting stuff!

Going back in time, I would say the Quicksilver Messenger Service, or later on, simply Quicksilver. John Cipollina is certainly an underrated guitarist though he seems to have more respect today (many years after his death) than he did back in the day.

How about Zappa and the Mothers? One of the greatest (and most prolific) bands ever. I know they're in the RnR HOF, but the average listener probably doesn't even know if they have heard them.

BTW go see Zappa plays Zappa if you get the chance.

Good stuff! You probably did hear them on the radio in Toronto, although I find mainstream pop/rock radio ignores them. When it was still extant, they used to be played a lot on CBC Radio-3 which showcased a lot of similar music. And yeah, Canada has some great alternative and indie bands. You might find it useful to check out the Constantines and, if you like more rock, the Novaks.

The Ventures.

49 years, over a hundred million albums sold.

Cited as major influence by almost everybody who started picking electric guitar in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
