Gentlemen, what a lot of seasoned advice on this thread! We've all been around this particular block, haven't we?

leonardocaster, it's a practice she wants you to miss, not the gig itself, right?

Then just a word of experience from me: if you insist on skipping the anniversary for the rehearsal, then I promise you that no matter how long your relationship lasts, come the moment in five or ten or twenty years when she is finally telling you to get out the door that missed anniversary will be remembered and brought out as damning evidence against you.

These are the ways of women. Amazing memories they have!

Take it from one who is sadder - if not much wiser...

Ceri--never were more truthful words spoken...women have this uncanny way of holding onto moments that they will bring into any battle as examples of how much you didn't love them.

Hahaha - it's like there's a huge mental boxfile full of all our misdeeds, listed alphabetically for easy access!

"And another thing: you said my mother had a behind like a hippopotamus!"

"...But that was fourteen years ago..."

NO!! I said YOU have a behind just like your mother had fourteen years ago. :P

On the lighter side................every single one of the opinion's expressed herein is correct. You are the one who has to decide where music and relationships interface in your life and give the priority to the one which needs to come first. As Ceri rightly observes, those who responded have been there and done that. The buck stops with the person who looks back at you from the mirror.

if you want to fight dirty:
"Wow, you sounded just like your mother!" thrown out at the right time, can win an unwinnable argument, but you will pay for it down the road.

You'd need the courage of tarzan to come that kind of line in my house. I prefer the inbuilt mute switch. She starts griping and i just turn my ears off. If its that important she'll repeat it later in a better tone of voice.

the real trick is to learn how to repeat a couple words everytime she pauses for a breath. This implies you are listening, but with practice you can do it without paying attention. if you get busted, you can pull the 'chute by saying something like:
"I'm sorry i just got so distracted staring into your eyes" well placed flattery works as well as anything. Women are defenseless against it.

Pretty wise and insightful advice on here.

Anyone in a band and a relationship has crossed this bridge. If you'd like to keep both than compromise is the answer.

Good luck, it's a fine line to walk to please everyone, including yourself.

Hey, why not treat her to a music show and then dinner. Eh? Tell 'er those songs you're practicing are for her (unless you're playing Slayer or something like that).

Talk it over with your Bro's and see if you can practice another night. If not do the dinner thing then go to practice.

Unfortunately Ceri is right in regards to women having EXTREMELY long memories in regards to things like this.

Years back i went to a training camp trying to make a semi-pro hockey team. Didn't make the team, instead started my "beer league" career but it caused me to miss our second anniversary. Years later during the break-up that matter was tossed in my face as she tossed my possessions out of the apartment.

Thanks to luck or providence all my guitars, amps and equipment were at our practice place. I'm sure see would have loved to play "Who" or Hendrix with them. She got no chance. :P

But seriously have a talk with her and tell her the spot your in. Heck she might actually understand and you can work it out. However, if she tells you to go to the practice, make sure she REALLY wants you to go.

Good luck to you and have fun at the gig!
