It is Pole Day for the Indy 500! If you have VS you can be watching 6 1/2 hours of coverage.

I have been a fan of Indy racing since I was a kid. Anyone else?

indy is cool but i myself am a nascar fan nothing like a 3200 pound cars hitting 200mph on a 1.5 mile track though i don't watch it as much any more since Dale Earnhardt died

Although I was never a fan of DE, I quit watching NASCAR when he passed away. He was the backbone of NASCAR, and he passed NASCAR went downhill quickly.

Hello Chet,

I always try to block out a free day
for the Indy Race, I'm not really of a
student of the contestants these days
but I enjoy the race nonetheless.

A great American institution{for me}

Enjoy the day, old boy.

Cheers.

I was going to post "is anyone was a NASCAR fan".

I've always been a fan of Indy but unfortunately money talks and Indy has suffered both from funding and the league split. It seems that the only race that counts in that series is the Indy 500. With drivers that haven't raced all season suddenly getting a ride. I don't find that to be much of a racing season. Their female driver program has been a disaster and an embarassment with the exception of Danica Patrick who was not allowed to win the Indy 500 because of Rahal's poor management or prejudice against women which he has openly stated that women have no business in racing. I'm glad she is now with Andretti although I don't know how much better her chances are in that team.

In comparison NASCAR has always maintained an incredible schedule of races with multiple main events like Daytona, Talledaga and now Fontana. NASCAR existed way before Dale Earnhart with many great drivers and personalities and continues to have some of the greatest drivers including Earnhart Jr. NASCAR is also a very family oriented program with many very loyal fans that support it's sponsors.

I respect everyone's opinion and hope that we can keep both traditions in racing alive with the support of it's fans.

I am a NASCAR fan, I actually had the honor of meeting Dale Earnhardt in 1997 at the MBNA 400 when I was the guest of none other then the king Himself Richard Petty. I got to hang behind the pits doing the race and I got to stand down near turn 1 with one of the officials and when they go thru that turn and you are looking up at them on the banking its freaky. It was a great day I even got into the drivers meeting with Bobby Hamilton who was driving the 43 at the time, I sat next to Jeff Gordon. People don't get into these meeting but Petty and Hamilton walked me in with them.

I also Have done the Petty driving experience once, which was cool.

The Champ Car Series folded earlier this year due to financial troubles and teams from there were invited to join the IRL. Some did and some just closed their doors.
I think the IRL will continue to grow and become the series that Champ Car/CART used to be before the split.

As for Danica, she was the first woman to ever win an Indy car race last year in Japan. I don't think she is quite the hot up an coming woman driver that she was made out to be. Personally I would rather see Sarah Fisher win a few races than Danica Patrick.

I am a fan of most types of Motorsports, unfortunately NASCAR has been dropped from my list of what to watch.

Sarah Fisher is one of those unfortunate drivers that don't get a ride all year and show up to the Indy 500 green. Lyn St James has mocked her for the outrages crashes and spinouts which even took her car one time. Although Sarah Fisher has a great circle track racing backgroung, Danica Patrick is probably the more experienced driver due to her road racing background like the Andrettis which she races for now. It's not her fault that people make her out to be a super hero for women's rights that has to win every race they go to see. She spends most of her time avoiding her fans that keep asking the same question, when are you going to win the Indy 500.

I would like to see either female win the Indy 500. But I respect Danica for saying that she wants to win first as a driver then as a women. I don't think Sarah has the same women's rights attitude as Lynn St. James rub it in your face personna that would likely have been the case if she had won.

If it wasn't for these women I don't think Indy would be as popular as it has been in the last few years. It has been more of a sporadic popularity stardom like the current Helio Castronives (danicing with the stars). The greats like Emmerson Fittipaldi, the Unsers, Andrettis who stuck around unlike Sam Hornish (NASCAR) and Jacque Villineuve (F1), Alex Zannardi (F1), Pablo Montoya (F1, NASCAR) exemplify what Indy is should be about.

don't forget about Bristol that's my favorite track besides talladega. though i don't watch nascar as much as i use to (do to outdoor activities like camping and disc golf) i still pull for earnhardt jr even though he isn't doing as good as he should. i'm a also a fan of truex jr and stewart. I'm planing on going to the indy race at iowa speedway this year. indy cars averaging 175 around a 7/8 mile track is pretty cool

Yeah, the short tracks are very popular in NASCAR. There are some drivers that are very good at that and others that do better in the larger tracks. The cars are specially prepared for those kinds of tracks. It takes a lot of science to get a 3000 pound car to run like an Indy car.

To add something into the car talk do any of you watch that show Top Gear? They play it on BBC America here in the U.S
