Personal feeling is if you have a Strat, Tele and SG, you can play a gob of different music and have a big, stupid smile whih will last decades.

Especially, if you play them through a Cyber-Twin.

We don't owe Fender anything. They were way out of line with those increases. The prices of the guitars were going up every couple of years, and this last increase was insane for this economy. Those SGs' (prices) are looking pretty good to me.

buy a SG then. gibson has always way over priced
there guitars fender hasnt.

I play both so here goes. Gibson guitars are pretty much hand crafted set neck guitars made in America by Amaerican workers. Fender guitars are bolted together and much of the work is CNC machined then assembled not hand crafted. Even Gibsons bottom of the line Melody Maker has a neck that is rough cut and finished by hand. There are slight variances in Gibson guitars necks and bodies because of the hand work involved. There are variances in Fender guitars too but for different reasons during assembly.

Since when is a hand crafted instrument overpriced? I have built a Strat clone myself, but I can't build a Les Paul or SG myself.

Which guitar is really overpriced?

$ 1,274 for an American Strat $ 1,199 for an SG Standard...seems easy to figure out the answer to that.

A guitar is a tool to me. Different tonal colors. If only played one brand or type of guitar and amp I would feel very limited. I believe the Melody Maker's original price was introductory. Anyway $485.00 for and American made guitar Isn't bad. What's Fender have that's made in the US for that price? My Strat was $300 in 1972 but at least it was made here.

I noticed in my catalogs from AMS, that the SG faded was up to $899.99 so maybe Gibson was losing money on those guitars and decided to lower the price. I see that the Melody Maker is now up to $485.00 from where it was just $350.00 over a year ago, and some people complain about Fender recently raising their prices? Gibson seems to do it on a daily basis while Fender tries to keep their prices within reason and only does change them every few years. I'll stick with Fender thank you!

Right On!

Fender has left its name on imported instruments from Korea ,Japan, and Mexico.Gibson only puts it's name on American instuments.Think how many Japanese or Korean Gibson Les Pauls they could have sold if they used the Gibson logo but thay have'nt.That's called integrety.Their lower priced instument are called Epiphone as we all know and theres no mistaking it.People over 40 years old remember when imported items were considered cheaper goods.Nike proved that you could make a crappy one width fits all shoe for next to nothing spend all your money on marketing and make a lot of money. No one cares that their I-Pod or their top of the line Plasma T.V. is made in China and dont think the guitar companys don't see that and want a piece of that.Trust me on this,in 5 to10 years you are going to have $1000 Chinese Fenders. They have been heading that way for years. My hats of to Gibson for keeping the brand honest. It's probubly taken a lot of crap for doing so.
Anyways, I wen't to buy one of those $699 SG's and came out with a $2000 Les Paul traditional pro model.First Paul i've had since 1978.What a fine instrument. That said my Big Apple Strat will allways be my desert island guitar.

I also tried the Les Paul Studio in worn cherry, but that thing had rough frets. And it was $799. I decided on the SG Standard. It just felt better to me. I figured you never know when they'll go back up to $1699...

and fender could stop right now making strats
for ten years and gibson still wouldnt be able
to catch up in sales.

It's not really how many you sell, it's what you're selling. Look I love my Strat, but I also love my Dano, Supro, Gibby's and even my Ibanez AS73 beater.

I just find it funny that some folks think one brand is so much better than another. Gibson is a solid company that doesn't need to go to Mexico or China to keep up. What would you rather do, sell 10 things foe $100 or one thing for $100?

This is a silly post... They are both good guitar companies, both make good guitars that we all love... Bottom line is - what can you get for your money... I really don't think it was necessary for Fender to raise there prices now.

I think they would do better to help out the little guy now. I mean I bought my son a MIM tele for xmas for $345, brand new from music123.com, just 5 months ago, now I can't even think about buying that same guitar for less then $500.

That's a 45% increase...That's just not right...
