I don't think it's dis-respectful either.

We don't owe Fender anything. They were way out of line with those increases. The prices of the guitars were going up every couple of years, and this last increase was insane for this economy. Those SGs' (prices) are looking pretty good to me.

Its nothing but a poor ploy to steal customers ... You can bet if this kind of spam was posted on the gibson site it would be removed quicker than lightspeed ...

1) This is no more spam than when someone here posted a gibson.com link to the then-new Darkfire, and we discussed the merits of the Darkfire vs Fender's VG.

2) You can be sure it is not a "poor ploy". It is a well thought-out marketing plan to increase Gibson marketshare during a downturn, taking advantage of Fender's steep price hike. Regardless of how many of us hate it, love it, or just don't care, you can be sure that Fender's marketing group has sat straight up and taken clear notice.

3) It's okay. Fender is already well aware there is some other company called "Gibson" and that they, too, make guitars.

4) I love nearly everything Fender and Squier make, especially Strats. But I love my '76 SG, too...

I just might....

That was why I started buying fender some 20+ years ago... the price

don't take offense... it is what it is, and right now fender guitars are WAY over priced for the quality.
I can get an american made SG Secial for a little more than a Strat made in mexico...

I like fenders, but I'm not going to be a fool.....

I am now taking an SG special into consideration. When I picked on up at GC, it had one of the best tones!!!! I am hoping that guitarcenter.com will lower their price in response. Is $699 the MSRP value for the guitar? If it is, then GC will lower it even more and it will be close to the price of a t-caster standard (my other consideration). Does anybody know if $699 is the MSRP?

I still dont think fender are overpriced. In the UK top end guitars have pretty much stayed the same. I was looking at my 2 yesterday to check current price the vintage hotrod is the same, the custom classic is significantly less (£1200 for customshop as opposed to the £1900 odd a year ago). I have a nagging suspicion that fenders thinking in the price hike is along the lines of 'well sales are going to drop, some people are still going to buy though. Those people would buy the product anyway so we may as well raise prices a little to cusion the blow.'

I don't think fenders are overpriced. Fender standard models (tele and strat) are about $550 and even only $1050 for an american standard. For gibson's 2 most popular models, standard is $1500 for an SG and $2500 for a Les Paul. Anyone wanna say Fenders are overpriced, now? If anything, I'd say they were underpriced, but then I wouldn't be able to afford one!

"$1050 for an american standard." ???
try $1,274.99 - $1,419.99.....

Sorry, I'm not just going to follow Fender blindly......

so your going from a over priced fender
to a over priced gibson? and yes the gibson is still
over priced.

I actually had less of a problem with your original post than I do with this one -- watch yourself, now.

I actually enjoy that people are talking about this. Last year when I saw the J Mascis Jazzmaster I started to save up money. It was around $800 then. By the time I had the $800 it was at $1200. I have always owned Fender products. Nothing special, just the standards. Right now I have a telecaster and a blues jr amp. This will be the first time I look at another brand to buy. In this time and economy people are asking way too much for way too little.

I hate to say it, but I bought a SG Standard yesterday. I originally went in for the faded special, but the Standard was prettier. I still love my old Telecaster and I would never give it up. I did compare the prices between the MIA Fenders and Gibsons and a lot of the Gibsons were less money. It was like shopping in Bizzaro World.
